Fic Rec

Nov 24, 2010 00:58

So lately I've been pursuing other fannish endeavors, mostly regressing back to my first fandom because SPN has become so difficult for me to watch.  Then I somehow stumbled upon this fic by gretazreta and was reminded of the amazing quality of writing the SPN fandom possesses.  I don't read a lot of fic and I certainly don't devour a 44,000 word ( Read more... )

Thanks for the rec! I have this fic bookmarked for quite some time now, but never got around to reading it. I don't know 'The Time Traveller's Wife' so I guess that's why I put it off. I bookmarked it because it came highly recommended back when it was posted and since I know and value gretazreta's writing, I thought I might like this one too. Thanks for reminding me of this fic again. :)

I am sad that you don't enjoy S6 so far, but I am confident (hopeful) that the story takes a turn in the second half of the season and allows Sam and Dean to rebond and heal. :)

You're welcome. :) I read "TTTW" when it first came out and really enjoyed it (in fact, I've read it twice now and saw the movie, which didn't come anywhere close to the book). The whole time paradox issue interests me and also lends well to SPN's destiny thread and time traveling subplots. I remember thinking when "In the Beginning" aired, that a "TTTW" crossover would be neat. But really, this fic rec goes beyond just my personal interest in "TTTW" and SPN. There are only about 3 other fics I've ever read in this fandom that would stand up to this one (IMHO) in terms of writing quality, plot ingenuity, and emotional impact. Two of them were by Big Pink if that gives you an idea of my fic preferences. :)

I really want to feel invested in SPN and get carried away by the possibilities of their story again. I adore Sam ( ... )

Heh, I see we share fic preferences. Big Pink's writing is exceptional and I was very sad when she stopped posting new SPN novels. SPN fandom has many great writers - and I read A LOT of fanfiction - but there was never anyone as proficient as Big Pink. I really miss her writing.

Their missing brother bond is something I can't seem to get past for some reason.
I totally understand that, even if I feel differently. I guess the absence of their bond just emphasises to me how intense and wonderful the presence of their bond is, and I think getting that bond back will be immensely satisfying. Also, some layers in the dynamics of Dean and soulless Sam are interesting to me, so that keeps me hooked. I'm not LOVING it - I don't think I can love a storyline that has Sam and Dean so estranged - but I enjoy the quality of writing, the pacing, the consistency, the direction and the humour this season a lot, so that tides me over until I get my Sam'n'Dean back, which is hopefully soon ( ... )

I didn't know this. :( I've yet to make it through all of her work, so maybe I'll try to savor it more now that I know there's a finite number of stories.

That's a good way to think about it. It makes wonderful sense in my head. Now if I could only internalize that and convince my heart to get on board with the whole Sam and Dean S6 dynamic.

I enjoy the quality of writing, the pacing, the consistency, the direction and the humour this season a lotI have to say, watching Sam without his emotions/empathy censoring his words, actions, and impulses is interesting--it's like seeing him through a different lens. And it underscores just how much his soul really influenced the S1-S5 Sam we saw (*loves Sam's soul*). If I wasn't so attached to Sam with a soul, I would definitely enjoy this Sam more because sometimes he's funny. As it is, I think seeing this Sam just reminds ( ... )

What was your first fandom?

I read this last month and enjoyed it, though not as much as you did it seems. I never read the novel, but I've discovered that by reading SPN fic I've "watched" all sorts of movies and "read" all sorts of books as a result ;) It was a suitably epic story for a BB.

I've certainly been disappointed by the SPN canon for a while now but the fic strikes me as being as good as it ever was although I am reading less canon-based fic these days and a lot more RPS. My impression is that there just is less long canon fic being written and a lot more codas and short pieces.

Harry Potter. My perked interest has to do with my SPN blah and because of the new movie release (which I've yet to see, doh). I used to write fic and was also part of a RPG.

That's heartening. My comment about this fic reminding me of S2/S2-S3 hiatus fic had to do with the insular nature of SPN and the fic at that time. Mainly, being solely Sam-n-Dean without a cast of angels and demons pushing and pulling and obscuring the story. I liked this fic because its sense of intimacy and narrow focus on just the boys and their bond reminded me of "simpler times" and what I think of fondly as my honeymoon period with this fandom. :)

Ah, yes I could see Potter fandom getting a boost from the new film.

And by watching vids, I've discovered all sorts of songs and artists I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Me too. Although I think the majority of vids tend to still use the slower, sappier tunes, there's quite a diversity of content out there.

As it happens I just finished reading a western time-travel fic set post-Shadows that did a really nice job of bringing back the S1 era issues Sam and Dean had, particularly with John.

I wonder if it's because the 5-year arc has now been ended and we're just getting the barest glimpses of a new mytharc that has yet to really give us meaty clues in which to elaborate on. I agree. I think right now the canon is changing so much episode by episode that unless a writer really was intrigued by their current path I couldn't see them ( ... )

What can we say? This fandom is full of a bunch of emo drama fangirls. :D

Sounds interesting. Is it worth a look?

the best period for fic may have been post-S3

It's a fine line between the show providing enough information to get people intrigued enough to want to write about future possibilities with some confidence AND leaving enough wiggle room such that the future story isn't dead ended or left in a way that the future looks mundane and predictable. The short of it is: there needs to be a clear cut goal with a variety of interesting canon-based possibilities on how to achieve it. I agree, S3 fit the bill for that more than any other season.

Cool, thanks, I like good fics. I'll read that. So, there's going to be an SPN con in Toronto next October. I wonder if it will be as good as the ones in Vancouver and elsewhere that have taken place while the show was still on a high and tight. I kind of think it won't and I think people will get the idea that it's somehow Toronto's fault, when in reality it's the show that doesn't pick it up and get some cohesive, brotherly interaction that fans are screaming for and not being heard. I think that con will fall short of expectations if things don't pick up show-wise, given that it will also be after the series finale likely. If the show goes out with a huge bang, the con will be well attended and will have an excited vibe, if not, just like most fan reaction as of late, it will be listless. I will roll my eyes if people blame it on a Canadian venue other than Vancouver ( ... )

I hope this season isn't SPN's last. JP and JA have signed on for another season. \o/ All that remains is the network green light. I for one want to see plenty of Sam with his soul. If this season ends with him getting his soul back and that's the end of everything, then I will be a little sad as I want to see brother bonding on screen for many episodes not just them driving off into the sunset and fade-to-black done.

The who here is now on at ten at night on a work/school night, ending at 11 p.m.

That sinks, but I'm glad you were able to finally find it on TV. Our station here keeps flashing this message saying that Time Warner cable might be dropping the CW (and therefore no SPN) and it would only be available on special cable packages and to call if you want the station to remain available.

I hope shows after Christmas will bring people back into loving the show againI hope so, too! It seems like for every one of us who are a little impatient for this seasons story to find ( ... )
