This is just for my own curiosity...do you find yourself buying local authors' books regardless if the topic/genre/etc interests you?

I personally do not, because of a tight budget, but many of my co-workers do. I think it is great that some of our customers actually have books on our shelves...but that might just be because I am a wannabe writer

In a general sense, it probably depends greatly on what your local writing scene is like. In Portland, I've been very pleased with what our native authors have to offer, so I find myself often being drawn to their books. On an individual level, I personally think its important to purchase local goods whenever possible- so if I'm conscientious about buying local consumables- why not local culture as well? Especially if it's a good book it feels nice that the author is living and writing in/about the same environment as they are ( ... )

I have to say I stocked this one man's books because I owe him--he runs a local zine and has without fail publicized my events. I don't think his books will sell--and I may end up gradually buying them myself out of guilt for ordering them from a wholesaler ;).

The only other local author we've had truck with actually sells, so ordering her stuff is no different than any other--with the exception that she comes in to make sure they get faced out!

I'm turned off by a lot of local authors just because they're real pushy. One comes in periodically to check we have his one book in stock and it's not uncommon for some to come in and just ask for us to carry their book, even if it's extremely niche and it would never ever sell.

I bought one author's book when she came in to do a book signing, it looked like the kind of book I'd like, but I might not have bought it if she hadn't come in.
