local love

This is just for my own curiosity...do you find yourself buying local authors' books regardless if the topic/genre/etc interests you?

I personally do not, because of a tight budget, but many of my co-workers do. I think it is great that some of our customers actually have books on our shelves...but that might just be because I am a wannabe writer

In a general sense, it probably depends greatly on what your local writing scene is like. In Portland, I've been very pleased with what our native authors have to offer, so I find myself often being drawn to their books. On an individual level, I personally think its important to purchase local goods whenever possible- so if I'm conscientious about buying local consumables- why not local culture as well? Especially if it's a good book it feels nice that the author is living and writing in/about the same environment as they are.

To really answer your question though, I actually discovered a great author on a whim because he was a Portlander. I picked up his book one day at the store serendipitously and took a chance on it, partly because of the fact it was a local writer. Certainly a large part of it was that the book looked interesting, so I don't know if I can say I would have done it indiscriminately (that I would have read it on its provenance alone without its content piquing my interest) but it definitely factored in the final purchasing decision.
