I think smoking sucks, but when all is said and done, it's not my job to police someone else or the choices they make for their family. That's like saying, "If you see a fat woman in the line at McDonald's buying a Happy Meal for her [skinny] child, should I call CPS because SHE MIGHT MAKE HIM DEATH FAT!!"

Sure, it's not good for the kids, but in an otherwise loving family I wouldn't call it abuse. A bad parenting choice, perhaps, but certainly not CPS-worthy.

Burgers are pretty damn unhealthy if eaten in quantity. Does that mean that if someone's stuffing their child with junk food that could cause them severe health problems, that we should take that child away?

What about if we THINK they are?

What about if they might be?

I don't like smoking but I wouldn't call CPS on a smoker. If someone were BEATING their child, sure, but smoking is something that a parent could be working on, may be working on, or will eventually work on. Beating is now.

Until smoking around children is illegal, I'm not going to call CPS on a smoker, as much as I'd like to.

I would never say something in that situation, and I'm quite sure CPS would laugh at me, deservedly so, if I called over smoking. At least where I'm from, they have real issues to deal with.

In that case, it's not illegal in this state and isn't my business. CPS wouldn't care. I would and have called the police when I have seen young kids riding without a safety seat before, though.

augh. I dont know how people can let their kids ride in a car w/o a safety seat... last year a woman was riding in a car with her newborn and two of her sisters kids... she got into an accident (speeding around a sharp turn) and killed all the passengers but herself because NONE of them (even the infant) were properly strapped in.

A baby recently died here in a car accident because her mother didn't fasten the car seat into the car or the baby into the car seat correctly. I believe the mother is facing charges.

Considering how complicated some of those car seats are, that's a bit over the top unless she just obviously wasn't trying.

My mom used to smoke heavily with us in the car. It wasn't that she was TRYING to kill us, it's that sometimes she'd forget to roll down the window.

It doesn't warrant a call to CPS. They have actual abuse to take care of.

Here in the UK its illegal to smoke with children in your car. I think its an on the spot penalty fine if you're caught.
