In that case, it's not illegal in this state and isn't my business. CPS wouldn't care. I would and have called the police when I have seen young kids riding without a safety seat before, though.

augh. I dont know how people can let their kids ride in a car w/o a safety seat... last year a woman was riding in a car with her newborn and two of her sisters kids... she got into an accident (speeding around a sharp turn) and killed all the passengers but herself because NONE of them (even the infant) were properly strapped in.

A baby recently died here in a car accident because her mother didn't fasten the car seat into the car or the baby into the car seat correctly. I believe the mother is facing charges.

Considering how complicated some of those car seats are, that's a bit over the top unless she just obviously wasn't trying.

Actually its much more common than you'd think for people to not strap them in well enough or to not snap the car seat in well.. some people just dont know.

That's what I mean. I think it's just wrong to bring a mom up on charges if she couldn't figure out the carseat and that's why the baby died.

If however, it was clear that she just wasn't bothering to strap it in well, I could see pressing charges.

I once just forgot to strap the carseat in. The kid was strapped in the seat, but the seat was not strapped into the car. It happens.

Locally, there are free classes at pretty much every hospital and fire station. You can even just pull up to a fire or police station and ask them for help if it's too complicated to figure out. They advertise this stuff at every OB and pediatrician I've ever been to, as well as in the newspapers. So while I'm not sure she should be charged, I'm also not sure that she had all that much of an excuse. Unless she never goes to the doctor or read billboards or newspapers.

my gosh...imagine the guilt with something like that...the whole thing just makes me sick.

yesterday I ran into the store while my grandma and 6 month old were waiting outside, she had her in her lap while waiting in the car. we were going to another store in the same parking lot and she said I'll just hold her while we go. I couldn't believe she seriously suggested that, I told her she was crazy and put my daughter back in her car seat.

You never know what could happen and I would never even think about risking it.

Speaking as a smoker, I would say something. In my state it is illegal insofar as I know, to smoke in a vehicle with a minor period. Not to mention I do not agree with inflicting your habits onto anyone else. IMO, no one should smoke with a child of any age in a vehicle, and I don't much care if your windows are rolled the whole way down or not :P

I'm happy to hear that you wouldn't do such a thing, and I agree it is terrible for children, but it's not worth calling the cops or CPS over.

Oh no, I didn't mean that I would call any authorities over it, unless they were rocking out a pipe or something. I just meant that I would probably say something to them.
