How would you feel about your child spending time with their friend's family - of which one parent is battling an addiction to painkillers
( Read more... )
my good friend in high school her parents were alcoholics and her mom was addicted to some pain killers. She hated being at her house because her parents were abusive verbally to her so she liked when her friends were there because her parents weren't as abusive.
If the parents were like this then no I'd prefer them to be at our home.
Of course unless someone told us the parents had some problems we'd never know my mom had no idea my friend's parents were alcoholics. They were never mean to us just my friend.
It'd depend on the level of addiction.
I wouldn't let my pre-teen or younger child stay over at all my teen maybe but again would depend on the level of the addiction.
as long as i was reasonably sure that the addiected parent wasn't going to be violent or rude and there was a sober adult around at all times, i would be ok with it.
i would not tell my kid somebody else's private business, but i would discuss it with my kid if my kid already knew.
My BIL has battled addictions to many things, most recently Xanax. He just came back from rehab a few weeks ago, and appears to be doing much better, for which I am greatful. At this point, however, I would never ever ever leave him as the sole person in charge of my daughter, though I'm fine with my MIL watching her while he's in the house.
I think I would want there to be a sober person there, especially if my kid were little, and thus required more supervision. If the family was open about the addiction, I may feel comfortable discussing it openly with them.
If my kid is old enough not to stick their fingers in sockets, then I wouldn't mind, so long as the addicted parent isn't leaving pills where kids can get them.
But what kind of an addict would leave their stash where anyone can get at it?
Well I guess that adds another dynamic. As a parent, would you expect to be told about the parent's issue with drug addiction? If you weren't told and found out later, would that change your opinion of the friend's parents? Would it change your decision on whether or not your kid can go there/be around the parent?
I think this scenario is coming from a different perspective than a lot of people are assuming. But then again, this is the Booj and it's full of many "ass"umers...
You actually did answer my question, thank you. You are obviously too far invested in this to see it clearly as a parent and not just as an addict who is very much on the defensive.
I am sorry for the judgment that you have dealt with and I wish you much luck in the future.
