After fighting with my machine for more almost two hours, I finally resigned myself to the fact that the only way I was going to get this zipper in was to hand-sew it

Oh Bonnie, I so hear you! I was so close to finishing that dratted Bilbo shirt on Friday: collar and sleeves both straightstitched on, all I needed to do was serge over and serge the sides shut and the thing would have been 95% done! but no. the serger had to break 2 needles and stop chaining half-war around the collar. EVen after re-threading the loopers it was being annoying. I'm hoping that giving it time off this weekend, will make it more tractable on Monday.
I HATE when the machines decide to be difficult! I look forward to seeing pics of your dress when it's done, though.
Though I figured I'd have to hand-stitch the skirt part, I'd hoped to do the majority with the machine.
At some point, I may look into getting a different zipper foot, if I can. I've only used this one once before - for lace with pearls down the center - and I had to take the tension all the way off and hand-feed it for it to work.
How's the handsewing going? I'm guessing you've already used a heavy needle and tried adjusting the tension?
Good luck with the zipper foot. I've really never tried much with presser feet, I've got the 'special' plastic one for invisi-zips, but they're almost more trouble to put in with the machine (I swear I'd do it faster by hand!). I've never tried a beading foot - did it work well for you?
I have a jeans needle in it because this fabric is thick enough - especially when I have multiple layers. The thread tension didn't seem to be the problem so much as the fabric just caught on the foot. Loosening the pressure just made everything sloppier, but I still had trouble with it catching.
I used the zipper foot for the lace with pearls down the center (for a different project). I don't have a beading foot as far as I can tell. I'm very new to this and wouldn't know what one looked like, but it seems like the feet I have are standard with the machine (which I bought used), so nothing so specialized like a beading foot. I don't think the previous owner did anything that fancy with it.
I finished the hand sewing yesterday, but I had hoped to progress much farther by now and was frustrated by this setback. I want this for the premiere next month and my free time is limited. I probably won't get to it again until Wednesday.

Hope your machine is working better today.
