Day 17 - Favorite mini series
Without a hesitation, it's Frank Herbert's Dune, which appeared on the SciFi Channel in 2000 (before it made the ridiculous move to Syfy).
I loved the book when I read in my senior year of high school. I remember reading it straight through in one weekend, barely stopping to eat, sleep, and pee. David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of Dune was rather unimpressive to me. It had some style, I suppose, but it didn't come close to capturing what I loved about the book -- sense of destiny and deeper spiritual tones entangled and distorted through war and politics, not to mention the drug world nature to the books most important commerce, and so much more.
The miniseries format suited the complexity of the book, however. It allowed the politics mixed with destiny and religion to develop and gave space for the characters, especially Paul Atreides, to be complicated and messy and sympathetic. On top of that the costuming, sets, and visual aspects were awesome and well suited to the story.
I love this miniseries, and I watched it over and over again when it came out, raving about it to anyone who was patient enough to listen. In fact, I'm surprised that I don't own it yet. And now, after talking it up, I'm dying to watch it, but I don't have access. Damnit.
