I was surprised but very pleased that Dad liked the cake as much as he did. He's been going on and on about my grandmother' cake for all my life, so it's gratifying to know that I not only met but exceeded his gold standard. Finally. *g*

And don't look to harshly upon people with lousy knife skills. *Raises a scarred hand* My knife skills stink, too. This is even more embarrassing since I'm a culinary student.

Aww, I don't look down on anybody for knife skills or lack thereof. I personally like working with my knives (yeah, I know that sounds kinky, but I can't think of a better way to phrase it), but I know all too well that even the best-trained chefs will screw up from time to time and cut themselves. It's just an occupational hazard of having your fingers around sharp blades all the time! Personally, my left index finger is actually missing part of the fingertip whorls because I once took a slice off of it, back when I was first learning how to cook.
It's just that... the way my mother holds knives is terrifying. I've tried, gently, to get her knives she's comfortable holding and demonstrate some safer techniques, but... I really do worry that someday she's going to cut something vital.

Tell me, have you even had the time to taste anything in the process? Just curious: when I experienced something similar, I hadn't, but realized only afterwards. That would be why I'm inclined to believe there's more than luck to this state of grace ;) *shakes head - this is so utterly, totally OC for me!*

It's funny you should ask about whether I had an opportunity to taste as I cooked, because the answer is no. I normally do season to taste, but this was one of those times where I had to use my best judgement and hope I was right. (I was, thank goodness.)
Hmm... maybe there is something more to it! Maybe it's the spirits of good cooks past. ;-)
