Eat Your Heart Out, Julia Child

Aug 21, 2009 10:32

Last night was Dad's birthday, so I brought over the birthday cake I made earlier in the week (pictures below, not that it's much to look at) and was prepared to help Mom make a dinner menu that we'd worked out earlier in the week, drawn from my favorite French cookbook. (Mom, too, has seen Julie & Julia, and was inspired, and so the idea sort of ( Read more... )

I want pork chops for breakfast.

I've zone cooked a few times - it's a wonderous experience, isn't it?

Why not have pork chops for breakfast? Hmm... might have trouble shipping them to you, though. ;-)

It really is a wondrous experience. I've cooked for big holidays before, sure, but this was just one of those rare perfect times when everything unfolds just the way you hope it will. You don't have to think; you just have to be in the moment.

May I please have the recipe for that cake? I know my mom and I would love it! We're eating healthier, yes, but Sunday is the only day of the week that she'll be here every week, so I'm trying to expand my repertoire of desserts to something more than brownies and ice cream.

And I'm impressed with your mad cooking skills! I never have to fix dinner for more than two people, and when I do, it's usually something easy ... we're lucky if I remember to cook a veg along with the main dish. (Which is very simple, by the way. I don't think I've marinated anything in my entire life.)

Absolutely! I'm always happy to share recipes. This is really a very simple cake to make, too. Eating healthy is an awesome idea, but I think the idea of the Sunday treat is a great one.

Thank you! I enjoy cooking, but yeah, being single means that I don't get to cook big meals like this very frequently, and it does often feel like too much fuss to do something this complicated. I do cook something special for myself sometimes, usually on the weekends so that I can portion out the leftovers and have them for quick dinners during the week, when I might not be home until 9 or 10.

But I do relish times like last night, when I can just cook and know that people will be able to enjoy it. That's just fun.

I'm happy to share it! I'll have to do a recipe post.

Thank you! I feel like I need one of those fancy, neatly-pressed aprons. I can wear it with my pearls. ;-)

That sounds like an absolutely fantastic meal!

I'd love the cucumber cashew salad recipe, if you can share it - I am drowning in cucumbers.

Thank you! It really was good. I don't get the chance to do something like this often, but it was fun.

I'd be happy to share the recipe! It's a wonderful use for extra cucumbers. I'll have to do a recipe post.

Hee, yes! I'll do a recipe post. Thanks very much. :D

(If you think it looks good, you should smell it. It made my whole refrigerator smell like chocolate.)
