IMPORTANT (Under Reported) LJ TAGGING SYSTEM CHANGE

Feb 08, 2010 19:15

HAHAHAAAA

Okay, so LJ has made a change to its tagging system. Before when you had multi-word tags, LJ would allow you to create it with a space (and that's how it would appear in your tags cloud/list) but would replace the space in the URL with a plus sign. That has changed. Now it leaves it as a space - which the URL automatically translates to ( Read more... )

I'm not sure whether to laugh hysterically or weep into an alcoholic drink. It's not like we ever, oh, ya know, link to tags on LJ or anything.

I particularly like the part where they didn't hardly tell anyone and all you get is a standard error page. I know I've had several in the last few days and assumed they were bad links until I tripped over the information. Grr.

Yes, a change to the tag error page explaining it would have been really nice. Sigh.

That explains a few error pages I've run into lately around here. I've not been around long enough to have noticed in a conscious sort of way, though I do remember looking at an LJ URL that had %20 in it several times and thinking it looked odd. But I need my tags with spaces, I really do... I've only just managed to comprehend the purpose and utility of tags well enough to start making some--I hope--meaningful use of them. I can't deal with having to modify those tags.

I've only been here since, I dunno, September, but already it seems to me that the LJ PTB are pretty big on sudden, unilateral, and often unannounced changes. :-(

Spaces really are fine, and it does make them tons more readable in the case of long ones - generally, I'm more frustrated by completely untagged fic journals than the reverse, particularly when you want to subscribe to be notified that an author has posted a new fic in a series! I know in some cases I end up linking to a verse tag because the author doesn't put internal links between installments of fics (or does so sporadically). This change will even be a good thing overall - as I mentioned, better web standards and all that. The problem was 100% notification ( ... )
