Oh, Fandom

Oct 04, 2009 17:43

There is a particular thread I've been tracking over at st_xi_kink where the readers have gotten a tad... pushy. As in, multiple comments every day demanding an update immediately. It's gone past cute and into the territory of annoying, particularly since tracking means I'm getting every one in my email inbox. The writer is being far more gracious than I ( Read more... )

I don't want to be rude, but stop playing a night in shining armour ok? The author of that story can take care of herself if she wants to. And I'm not suprised that people are insisting. Just look at ALL the stories which have one or two chapters and are not continued and author won't even leave a note saying "Hi guys, just to let you know don't dream about the next chapter". Maybe you like to be dissapointed and wait ages for an update that will never come, but others don't. So try to respect their point of view, because that is the only way in which they can inform the author that they really want an update. In my opinnion - when you started to write a story which have readers, you should finish it, and not run away, because you are bored or you now fancy something else

Perfectly entitled to your point of view and, like you said, the author has been taking care of herself. There is actually a genuine possibility that the comments will fill up as they have in the previous meme posts ( ... )

If you are not playing a knight in shining armour, then why you anounce your deed to all people on your livejournal. Are you that proud of your achievement? A cheap show off honey.

Pfft, your comment makes perfect sense. The author said that she was busy, so bothering her with new comments every few hours isn't about to speed her up. As for your little anonymouse here, I'd wager that she's written a minimum of two of the "little reminders" :P It's nice to know that people are looking forward to another instalment, but pestering would probably make me put off posting (I'm contrary like that).

The original comment I left in the thread was very polite, you'll note, and I do feel there's a difference between reminding and what's been happening in this case.

Holy Crap, Batman!

Point the first...I would block any more Anonymous posts. What does it say about your poster that she/he came over here and took aim at you on your home turf without signing it?

Point the second...great comment, and very much in line. I'm not surprised that the people posting don't get that what they are doing is impolite. Assuming a person has abandoned a story because they don't post for a few days is premature. It's not like the author is getting paid in anything other than positive comments, and she does have a real life. I've seen f-locked vent posts by frustrated authors receiving this type of comment. Good on you for being the "knight in shining armour".

Point the third...the only fandom I've personally run into this type of overly pushy behaviour so far is with Star Trek reboot fans (and then only a few). I guess I've been lucky with the other fandoms.

I was kind of impressed by the speed of the comment, actually. :P

Yes! One of my husband's favorites! I've made better than this loaf, but that was my error rather than the recipe (Better Homes & Garden version with the streusel option). And, really, there is no such thing as a bad banana bread.

'Pushy' is a very diplomatic term for some of those comments. The author seems to be taking it in stride, so good for her. I, however, would be peeved.

Isn't - Though shall not bug authors asking for updates - one of fandom's commandments?
