i've started buying a lot of magazines. it's a sign of my disposable income, and my inability to save.
my latest acquisition is Graphic10: Taking a line for a walk (diaries, notebooks and sketchbooks) add that to previously acquired Esopus: Process and Drawing from Life: the journal as art and i see i have a thing for other people's process... at ( Read more... )

Do architects still get to make presentation models these days, or is all just CAD?

I'm missing making stuff quite badly at the minute. I've just got lots of papers to read and write about, and arguments with people that don't understand design about the design of a robot that won't be made for months yet and is going to get built by another company anyway. Most of my creativity does go in problem solving rather than independent ideas, but I'm not even getting to do that now.

I had to build a big black hardboard box for doing light experiments in the other day, I haven't been so happy at work for weeks.

depends, but not here. mostly, commercially-minded practices contract that stuff out. i did spend a bit of time at a big practice working in their in-house modelshop, which was nice, gave a good vantage point to observe the fireworks in the rest of the office, but didn't allow for much (or any) design input.
the better thing would be an office that still makes design models, working process stuff, rather than final presentation models. they do exist, but they're rare.
i've started making stuff again - still working on that hood/scarf, patching clothes, but it's not exactly art. for want of a better word. actually i think that is the right word.
i have plans for a new improved pinhole camera, which i'm quite happy about. or maybe i should just improve the existing? that way my pride and joy wouldn't end up gathering dust...
