The Final Countdown

I deleted last night's post about Amazon, as more facts have emerged. Right now, it does indeed look as if Amazon has pulled their direct sales link to all Macmillan titles over an asinine corporate dispute about e-book pricing. Neither side is innocent, and it's the author's livelihoods that are suffering. Chalk up another big FAILwin for ( Read more... )

Alexia Tarabotti, the heroine, is supposedly fat, ugly and dull, but as everyone else in the book wants to bone her, I call shenanigans.

Just wanted to call shenanigans on this sentence.

She's not fat, ugly and dull. She's also, being very conspicuously of Italian descent, not in line with English standards of beauty. She's voluptuous (and I don't mean that in the "I'm obese but can't admit it" sense), she's got an aquiline rather than button nose, and her skin is of olive complexion rather than the in-vogue pale. And her problem is not that she's dull, but that she's not dull in the way that single women in her situation were expected to be. Maybe her scientific and political ideas are dull to those whom she's supposed to court.

So it's no surprise that the people who like her are the Scot, the American, and the guy who predates contemporary fashion sense.

Anyway, on balance I enjoyed the novel quite more than you seem to have, finding it better-written and more fun than much of its genre, even if it did clunk along every so

Ah, I think what we have here is a quality-of-writing issue...Alexia refers to herself as overweight and unattractive so often that I might have gotten muddled because the POV shifts weren't always terribly clear.

Honestly, she reminds me of that friend who needs constant reassurance that no, she is NOT fat and VERY pretty. After so much Mary Sue-ing, my eyes started to glaze over a bit.

But I'm glad you enjoyed the book! I think we need more historical fantasy and like I said, I really hope it comes together a little more with CHANGELESS.

First the removing all gay books from it's site and now this. Boy Amazon has been on a roll.

Oh and by the by, I loved the new cover of Shades of Night.

I'm upset at Amazon. With my tax refund, I was so excited to place a big order with them, and knocking out quite a few of the books I'd been wanting to buy.

I tried to add some things to my cart tonight, and most of the stuff on my wishlist was unavailable. (Including Demon Bound, which I'd been wanting to buy!) I guess I'll just have to stop ordering from there all-together!

I guess its Borders for me!
