Jaejoong smiled faintly to himself as he relaxed into his nest of pillows, watching through lowered lids as Silver and Key bickered back and forth over who was cheating whom. The pair had moved themselves to a low-lying table surrounded by floor pillows, and engaged in a betting game involving dice and the movement of pieces around a game board. Jaejoong was fairly certain that between himself and his three friends they had created a dozen versions of said game, but apparently Silver and Key couldn’t agree as to which one they were playing. As the two played they argued over rules, made a variety of wagers, and extracted the promise of secrets or servitude as the game progressed onward.
Yoochun had hastily declined playing, tossing a worried glance between Key’s sharply-vulpine features and Silver’s disarmingly-blue gaze. “No thanks, I think I’ll sit this round out?”
Key, with dice in hand, gave a wicked smile. “Do you want to play the winner?”
Yoochun winced and shook his head. “I’m not sure I’d survive the loser, to be honest. You two have fun and I’ll sit with Jaejoong and watch.”
And so the black-haired Hunter withdrew to the sitting area near the table, settling himself at the Prince’s side. Now and again they exchanged commentary on the progress of the game, watching as fortune shifted from Silver’s favor to Key’s, and then back again. As soon as Silver was winning, Key was complaining she was cheating, and when Key was winning Silver taunted him it was only a temporary condition. The banter and insults flew thick and fast, but overall there was a friendly air to the competition.
Drowsing, Jae shifted slightly and then sighed. “Are you three staying here just to save me from the King?”
“You know Key and Silver way too well to assume that they have a singular motive for any action they take.” Yoochun murmured in a disapproving tone as he keenly watched the dice fly across the board. “And I am your Hunter, my place is by your side.”
Jae’s lazily-lowered lids snapped to glaring slits. “To protect me from my father.”
Yoochun scoffed and shouldered him. “To protect you from anything that may seek to harm you, Highness, and to be your best friend even if you don’t want me to. So, are we going out for a run?”
“Right now?” Jaejoong snorted and rolled over, burrowing into a pillow. “I don’t think so. Maybe later, just after the banquet where my father will be reminded I exist and feel compelled to lecture me about something.”
“Late night run?” Silver perked up, dice clicking in her hand as she met Yoochun’s glance. “Sounds great, count me in.”
“Me too.” Key smiled as he watched the dice click and clatter across the board. “Well, that could have gone better for you, Silver-darling.”
The female shoved him and pouted playfully. “Shut up, Key, it’s not over yet.”

Jaejoong slunk out of the Feast and bolted down the darkened hallway, kicking out of his shoes just as fast as he could and snatching them up as he went, his bare feet slipping on the tile as he sharply rounded a corner. Staggering slightly he stripped off the vest and embroidered-silk tunic he’d dressed in for supper, gliding along as silently as possible. His goal was to put as much distance between the Great Hall and himself, as fast as he could, before anyone noticed he was missing.
Another sharp turn led him to a quiet study with a window to the grounds, and he locked the door behind him before tossing his clothing and shoes aside. Pushing the window open wide he stripped out of his trousers, slipped into his wolf shape and leaping out into the night. With a soft crunch the white wolf landed in the gravel that filled the flower bed, twisting around the gardenia hedges and streaking across the green lawn and into the waiting forest.
As he ran, Jaejoong wondered how long he would have before the others were on his heels. He guessed Yoochun would be first, because his best friend was rarely fooled by any of Jaejoong’s schemes. And then? Probably Silver, she took her position as a decoy and guard seriously. Key would be busy socializing, there was a chance he wouldn’t realize what had happened until the other two disappeared. Even then, there was a chance Key wouldn’t notice…
‘Please don’t let them notice…’
Turning into a narrower path through the woods, the white wolf flattened himself out and stretched his stride. Moving with silent fleetness toward the deeper woods and neighboring unclaimed territory, Jaejoong hoped that none of his friends would notice his early departure, but he wasn’t naïve enough to believe it would happen. Luck wasn’t that fond of him, she had the tendency to favor his ‘soul-mate’ instead. Which was why he wasn’t surprised at all when a shadow detached itself from one of the looming trees, and clung to his side instead, chasing him deeper into the woods.
Turning to glare sulkily at Yoochun’s black shape, Jaejoong huffed and flashed a glimpse of fang before resigning himself to company.
‘It figures I wouldn’t even make it off of Palace grounds before you would catch up.’ He complained through Pack-bonds, vaulting over a downed tree and then squirming under another one. ‘I can’t even have the illusion of privacy?’
‘It could be worse, Joongie.’ Yoochun responded with a grin and a huffing noise that was akin to a wolf’s version of laughter, his bright green eyes glinting in the moonlight that dripped down through the canopy. ‘I could be Silver, or one of your sisters, or a guard sent to drag you back to your father.’
Jaejoong sneezed and scrambled over a tumble of boulders, wriggling his way through a series of hedges and shrubs in a half-hearted effort to lose his new shadow. Yoochun followed easily, nudging the Prince’s haunches in affection before letting Jaejoong gain a slight lead. Once back on an actual path -a deer trail that lead to one of the nearby springs- the black Hunter kept his nose even with the Prince’s haunches, content to follow in silence.

The unclaimed lands that separated the Glacial Lake territory from that of Emerald Fern were densely forested, scattered with glades and the occasional meadow. The river that twisted through Emerald Fern and ended in a lake in the Northern Pack’s territory also made a few lazy turns through the neutral land, slowing to clear-watered swimming holes and a few shallow stretches.
Jaejoong led the way to one of the deeper parts, vaulting off the silvery-granite boulders in wolf shape and landing in the river as a pale-haired human man. His jump ended in a graceful dive, hardly disturbing the water with his entry. For a while he darted to and fro, surfacing for breath and then speeding along through the water like a strange fish, his movements quick and fluid.
Yoochun shifted back to his own human form and sprawled on one of the boulders, making himself comfortable on the bed of ferns that had begun overtaking the stone. He watched in amusement as the Prince swam and splashed, content to outwait the Royal he knew so well.
When Jaejoong slowed in his swimming and moved back to the shallower waters so he could stand, the Hunter lifted his head. Watching the Prince wade until the water was waist-high, he rested his chin on folded arms and considered his best friend with serious green eyes. “Is this all we’re doing? Sneaking out of the party for a mid-night swim?”
“It’s all I’m doing while under supervision.” Jaejoong replied in a sweet tone, glancing over one shoulder with a mocking smile. “Sorry to disappoint you.”
“Come on now, Jae-ah.” Yoochun pouted at him. “We’re soul-mates and best friends, and have been since we were pups. Can’t you tell me, even if you won’t tell anyone else?”
“Why would I?” Jae sulked, turning to face his best friend as he folded his arms over his bare chest, still waist-deep in the river. “You’re ruining all my plans by following me out here.”
“I told you I wasn’t going to let you get into trouble alone, not when I could be there right alongside you.” Yoochun pointed out, sitting upright and sulking. “Come on, Joongie, don’t be mad.”

Yunho escaped to the woods after his usual evening visit to his sister, needing solitude and the trees around him while he sorted through his thoughts. Ji-Hye was far enough along in her pregnancy that her belly was round, and she rarely attended the dinners held in the main hall. Instead of making his older sister look for him, Yunho sought her out here and there, sharing a meal in her favorite parlor or reading to her in her rooms.
Tonight she had asked him about Glacial Lake, becoming very interested in what he wouldn’t say. If he had to explain why it made him so uneasy to answer her questions, Yunho admitted -at least to himself- it was because it seemed like Ji-Hye had known what he had done. Technically speaking, it was against the rules for him, Changmin and Junsu to have gone into the mountains; they weren’t supposed to do anything that could be considered a danger to the Truce.
So they had gone, but they’d resolved to tell no one about it. And now? Yunho’s beloved older sister -who knew exactly when he was lying, or failing to tell her the whole truth- was asking about a Pack that he shouldn’t have seen yet, much less be able to talk about. Yunho had waved it off, for the most part, but still wondered about her scrutiny.
Even though it was impossible, it had felt like Ji-Hye knew. Yunho just couldn’t shake the idea. And so, as he escaped into the woods, he mulled over the why of his sister’s questions… And wondered when she would reveal she had known he was keeping secrets from her.
Slowing from a silent sprint to an aimless walk, Yunho meandered through the paths of the neutral territory that lay between Emerald Fern and the mysterious territory of Glacial Lake. As he neared the river he came to a halt, freezing at the sound of strange voices arguing over splashing. Inching closer the cinnamon-coated Emerald Fern Prince straightened, his ears focused on the sound.
Who on earth was that?
