Yunho shifted on his paw, somewhat restlessly, as they watched the last few Hunters and Scouts leave the mountains. The broader-built Hunters outnumbered the lean Scouts, stalking along at their heels as the Scouts trotted to and fro. Whatever they were doing -perhaps making sure none of the juveniles or pups were lost or lagging behind the Pack- they gave no notice of the trio watching from the distant plateau.
‘Sloppy.’ Changmin thought to Yunho, censure in his tone as he considered the trailing wolves. ‘They’ve fallen out of formation and missed us completely. Not the sort I’d trust with Royals to be sure, but I’m not sure I’d trust them to have my tail either, considering…’
‘There is little chance of an enemy following them from their Northern Den.’ Yunho pointed out softly, though the fact that the wolves were so disorganized and seemed so confident they were in no danger bothered him. What if, due to their carelessness, his little white wolf got into trouble before they could meet?
‘You know as well as I do that “little chance” is not “no chance”, Yunho.’ Changmin scoffed. ‘And we both know better than to trust something that seems easy or simple. Tell me that their behavior -if they are guarding your Mate- does not bother you.’
Yunho flashed fang at the younger wolf and gave him a warning look, already internally bristling at the thought. ‘You know it would and does, Changmin.’
Changmin bowed his head, acknowledging the warning and Yunho’s dominance, but was unrepentant as always. ‘You may bring it up at the Meet, hmm? Carelessness when guarding your Mate is not the sort of thing to tolerate.’
‘Yes, thank you for that.’ Yunho huffed, shaking himself as the last of the trailing Scouts were out of sight. ‘Can we change the subject now?’
‘I can’t wait to tell the others!’ Junsu crowed as he cut into the conversation, bounding around on the plateau in his glee. ‘Won’t they be jealous!’
Changmin sneezed, amused that the bright-eyed Junsu had missed his friends having their almost-argument. Yunho had to work at the crinkle of eyes that indicated a wolf’s smile, wagging his tail a few times in an attempt to sell the weak gesture.
Junsu -as happily natured as he was- accepted it easily and bounded back into the pass through the mountains. His fleet strides had him streaking for the forest, his voice through the PackBond calling back to them in the hopes of a race. Changmin -more sharply witted than his hyung- made a few cracks about Junsu needing a head start, but remained at Yunho’s side.
‘Are you alright?’ He asked after a moment of silent pacing, his eyes concerned when he glanced to his Prince. ‘I didn’t mean to needle you; you’re not usually so quick to dance with me in a temper… And before that, well you’ve been, quiet, since we started watching them. Are you reluctant to meet your mate?’
‘Fine.’ Yunho answered without conviction, his tail lowering as he seemed to droop. ‘Reluctant to meet my mate? No, not really… Look how happy Noona is, expecting children with her mate.’
‘Royal pups are a big deal.’ Changmin shrugged. ‘You should be glad for your sister, and yourself, really… Thanks to her expecting children already, you’ll be safe for a while. No one is expecting you to buckle down and sire right away, are they? Your father wouldn’t do that…’
But the younger wolf didn’t sound exactly sure, and Yunho couldn’t help but snort at the hesitation. ‘Da is eager for me to mate and settle down, you’re not fooling anyone by trying to remain neutral on that topic. I’m sure he’ll do his best to pick out his favorite Princess and shove her in my direction. See if he doesn’t.’
‘Guess Junsu and I will have to run interference for you then.’ Changmin sounded amused by this prospect; he enjoyed a practical joke and a chance for mischief. After all, being the youngest of them, it wasn’t like he ever got in any real trouble anyway. ‘Your father won’t know what hit him.’
‘Isn’t that what we always say about matings?’ Yunho shook his head. It was nice that -even after needling him and their near-argument- Changmin was firmly on his side. Even when it came to disobeying the King’s will.
‘If I didn’t know you as well as I do, Yunho-ah, I would misunderstand a great many things you do…’ Changmin murmured after a few moments of silent pacing. ‘But since I do, I will remark on the most recent one. I would just like to point out, hyung, when that white wolf looked at you… Well, I don’t think you know what hit you.’
Yunho scoffed to cover up his unrest, shouldering the lean Scout. ‘It was half a world away, Min-ah, don’t exaggerate. There’s no telling if that white wolf even was looking at me.’
‘Don’t you try to lie to me, or we’ll have it out right here.’ Changmin muttered with a flattening of his ears. ‘Prince or not, Dominant or not, hyung, you know better than to lie to me. The Scouts and Hunters that just followed the Pack never even glanced our way. You know it, I know it, and it bothered the hell out of both of us. But that white wolf? Whoever they were? That Royal saw us, and I think so you, so you better get your head straightened out and accept it.’
‘The black Hunter saw us too.’ Yunho replied, determined to lessen the impression the little white wolf seemed to have on his Scout. A distinct impression that -if Yunho was honest with himself- had also affected the Prince that had disobeyed all rules in order to catch even a glimpse of the Northern Pack.
‘Of course he did.’ Changmin scoffed. ‘After the Royal stopped dead and stared at you from leagues away. How could he not?’
‘I’m done with this conversation. Come on, or we’ll lose Junsu.’ Shaking himself, the Prince picked up a lope and dove into the trees, shouting ahead to the disappeared wolf.
Changmin watched him go with a tsk and a faint shake of his head, not even bothering to rant about stupid hyungs not seeing what was directly in front of their noses. It was an old argument, one he had finally given up on having with himself. Now he simply intended to sit back and watch, and be amused when he wasn’t making sure the King didn’t interfere in Yunho’s life.
Regardless, the young wolf knew he wouldn’t be bored. There was simply no chance of that. ‘Hyungs! Wait up!’
Junsu laughed from somewhere in the woods beyond the pass. ‘What happened to all that speed you were bragging about earlier!?’
‘That was earlier! Now I’m hungry! Changmin complained, bolting down the stone path and hurtling into the woods. ‘I can’t run when I’m hungry! Feed me first, and then we can race!’

Yunho pulled on trousers and a loose crimson shirt, nodding faintly in dismissal to the staff as they bowed and withdrew from his room. Changmin had already shifted and dressed in the bronze uniform - marked with a crimson paw over his heart- that were his right as the Prince’s Scout, and was now sprawled on a couch and prodding at a tray of food that had been left for the Royal and his friends. As Yunho watched, the younger male gathered a few treats up in both hands and settled back to the serious business of eating.
“Save some for the rest of us, Min-ah.” Junsu muttered as he pulled on his traditional black uniform of a guard, a crimson wolf-paw embroidered over his heart indicating he was the Prince’s personal Hunter. A guard of sort, when there was need.
“I promise nothing.” Changmin shrugged, muttering around a mouthful of food. “You forget I’m still growing.”
“Gods, I hope not.” Yunho huffed as he snatched up a sandwich and fell into a comfortable chair. “You’re already taller than most of us… Just stay as you are, dongsaeng.”
Changmin looked smug, but made no reply as he continued to work his way through his selected snacks. Junsu grinned and elbowed the younger wolf, stretching out with a sigh. “So now are we all just supposed to sit around and do nothing while we wait for the Royals to meet up and declare it safe for the Packs to visit?”
Yunho snorted, chewing and swallowing his bite of food before he gave a faint nod. “More or less, yes, that is exactly what you’re supposed to do.”
Changmin smiled like a cat that had gotten the cream. “Well, isn’t it nice to know what we’re supposed to do.”
Junsu tilted his head, eyeing Changmin and the almost resigned expression that flitted through Yunho’s eyes before a smirk of amusement settled in. “So, I take it we won’t be doing exactly what we should be doing, right?”
Changmin smiled even wider. “Ahh, see hyung? You do catch on.”
