Waiting for Glacial Lake Processional to appear, time seemed to creep slowly by. Or perhaps it was hardly moving at all, like syrup dripping from the trees in winter. The three wolves waited with a silent restlessness, though Changmin’s curiosity rushed along the edges of Yunho’s mind as his tension no doubt rubbed at the other two. Junsu gave little impression of noticing, his eyes darting along from bird, to a buck foraging in a lower glade, to the thin paths where the wolves would appear, and back.
Yunho didn’t really care for the common nature around them, his attention and thoughts focused only on the Pack that should be approaching. He still didn’t see any new wolves… Still didn’t see…
‘There!’ Yunho murmured at last, surging to his feet as he noticed movement just before the foremost group of Glacial Lake wolves drift into view. ‘Glacial Lake Pack, here they come…’
‘Min-ah, look!’ Making a noise of surprise, Junsu sprang to his feet eagerly.
‘I’m looking…’ Changmin shot the pair a look and stood up slower, inching forward slightly.
The path the Pack followed wound through the passes of the mountains, narrow trails long ago worn by wolves or sturdy mountain goats and brave deer. Thin ribbons of passage were worked through stone and ice; the narrow paths meant the Pack came out into the open in smaller, scattered groups rather than a singular strong unit. It was safer for them, in a way, ensuring that if something were to surprise them only part of the Pack would be exposed to danger.
Yunho huffed, flicking his tail and tilting his head in mute bewilderment as he considered the group. It was the wide-spread opinion that the Glacial Lake Pack would proceed with caution, particularly leaving the security of the mountains for a stretch of open land. However, the front-runners of the Processional were not broad-built Hunters and only one appeared to be of the rangy build of a Scout; their builds were lean and graceful, with coats that gleamed the silver and white; the colors and build that indicated the Royal family.
‘Royals.’ Yunho murmured. ‘Father said the Northern Royals are all colors of snow, shadow and starlight; but the King, who is as dark as the mountains in which they den.’
A bold silver wolf with white socks was the first behind the leggy sand-colored Scout, head carried high and proud. There was a pleased, prancing sort of grace to movement, amusement perhaps at one of the companions. To the silver wolf’s near-side paced a solidly white wolf, slightly lighter of build and possessing a somewhat quieter manner and grace. As the white wolf drifted to the side to nudge the silver wolf, they were suddenly joined by a third. Beside the white wolf appeared a broad, black-coated Hunter.
‘So then, a Scout.’ Changmin nodded to the sandy-coated leader, built in a manner similar to himself. ‘And two royals there?’
‘With a Hunter…’ Junsu mused, considering the black wolf before turning his eyes to the next cluster of wolves that appeared. ‘And then?’
A steel-gray wolf accompanied by two wolves of lighter gray that were splashed with similar white markings, appeared. Moments later a black and gray wolf trotted to the steely wolf’s side -a Hunter- and two wolves of mixed tan-and-gray coloring quickly followed.
‘Another three Royals.’ Yunho replied with decision, nodding slightly. ‘And three Hunters… And another Royal, I think. And there’s another Scout.’
Moments later a larger group appeared, juveniles that leapt joyfully around each other and a few scouts. Now and then Changmin or Junsu identified Hunters or Scouts, murmuring over others they weren’t sure about. Yunho kept turning his attention back to the shades of gray and white and silver near the head of the Pack, the royals.
A smaller wolf with a largely white body and gray blanket-like marking streaked from the back to join the group at the front. Pausing to join the white and silver wolves with their black Hunter, the Royal visited for a moment and then went streaking along ahead to the next group. Moments later a solid gray Scout with a black stripe down his back followed.
‘More Royals and their guards…’ Changmin murmured, watching with a wag of his tail. ‘Well, Yunho, I have to say their wolves are all attractive.’
‘At this distance, how can you be sure?’ Junsu muttered, and then yelped when the leggy black-and-brown wolf bit him. ‘Ouch! Minnie-ah! What was that for?’
‘One of those is probably Yunho’s mate, idiot.’ Changmin muttered. ‘Be nice.’
‘Are you saying my mate will be ugly?’ Yunho muttered in a complaining tone, giving Changmin a disapproving look.
‘No.’ Changmin muttered, ducking his head slightly. ‘I’m saying I wouldn’t ever say that. Though apparently you don’t have to worry, because Junsu will be all too happy to point it out if that’s the case!’
‘Ya! Minnie-ah, I didn’t mean it like that!’ Junsu whined.
Yunho ignored them for the moment, inching forward as he noticed the white Royal and its escorts had stopped. He moved forward again, halting when the rocks abruptly ended, his paws very near the edge of the stone shelf. Trees stretched on below him, still draped in a thin tracery of snow. Yunho was careful -especially this close to the edge- but he wanted to see as best he could. At the moment, he was silently cursing that they had to be so far away, but took solace in the fact he would see the Northerners up close soon enough.
The white wolf was still looking their way, and after a moment as if noticing the Royal’s attention, so was the Hunter. The silver and white marked wolf glanced ahead to the other Royals, behind to where more of the Pack was appearing, and then nudged the white. A moment later the silver wolf repeated the action, finally earning the other’s attention. Clearly it was time for them to move on, and after a few moments the white wolf complied, shaking from nose to tail before picking up a ground-eating trot. It did not look at Yunho again.
The black Hunter lingered for another moment, seeming to stare directly at Yunho in spite of the distance. After another few moments of consideration, it glanced after its charges, shook itself off and trotted after the pair without a backward glance.
The three moved on, and another tangle of wolves took their place. Inwardly, Yunho frowned, watching the three continue on. In the back of his mind he registered that Junsu and Changmin were bickering in low tones about the newest group, but his attention was fixed on the graceful little white wolf.
A little white wolf that was most likely a Royal, most likely a Princess… A wolf that was likely one of his mate prospects, particularly if his father had any say in the matter. At the moment, Yunho didn’t much care for his father or the Pack, or what they would think about a Royal mating that would secure Peace…
At the moment, all his thoughts were for the strange white wolf that was too far away for him to see in detail. ‘Are you the one? Is that why you noticed us? Is it you, Royal?’
