using Adobe Photoshop CS
I originally made this for tumblr so sorry for the big canvas. also, as usual, I changed my mind a lot so this is probably the long way of going about things lol
ONE
Prep the cap. I do this by duplicating layers and setting it to different blending modes. It usually goes Normal > Multiply > Screen > Screen then stamp the result on a new layer and put that layer to Soft Light. the cap now looks like this:
TWO
I knew I wanted to make a brownish graphic so I create
a new color fill layer set to #7B6330 and put it on Hard Light:
the effect was too strong so I dragged it under the Soft Light layer
THREE
you can probably skip these next few steps lol but I originally wanted to put some purple tones too so still working under the Soft Light layer, I make
a new color fill layer #55165E and set it to Lighten:
FOUR
I usually like to bring up the saturation level first to get richer tones don't worry, I'll desaturate it later so I make a new adjustment layer > hue/saturation and up the saturation to +10
FIVE
Time for lighting! I discussed how I make light blobs
here but basically I just
paint a white dot at the middle of the canvas, enlarge it with free transform and then move it around the canvas. obviously the light is coming from somewhere above her face so I place the blob there making sure that only the more translucent parts of it is actually on the canvas.
it's more of a light gradient, really
SIX
again, for deeper colors, I stamp the visible image on a new layer and set it to Multiply, 33%
SEVEN
it's too dark so I create a levels layer and set it to:
RGB 0 1.47 209
RED 0 1.22 255
BLUE 0 0.78 255
EIGHT
as this point I probably didn't know where I was going with coloring but I remember trying to get more purple tone so I make
a new color fill layer #E1D2D2 and set it to Multiply, 100%
NINE
Still not satisfied, I turn to my favorite step (at the moment): THE WHITE SATURATION LAYER. which is basically make a new white color fill layer set on Saturation and play around with opacity until you're satisfied. This is at 75%
TEN
finally I'm happy with coloring! so I start to work on sharpening/contrast. I create a new layer, stamp the visible image, sharpen it then set it to Hard Light. then I play with opacity until it looks good. This is at 33%
ELEVEN
I decide that I want to put a little more texture so I create a new layer, stamp the visible image, go to Filter > Film Grain
i use the default settings. yes, I'm that lazy
I experiment with blending modes to see which best fits and for this graphic, I settled on Lighten and set it at 33% and it now looks like this:
yeah, the texture effect is so subtle, idk if it even makes a difference
TWELVE
final step! (coloring-wise at least) I make a new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and set it to +10/-10
at that basically the trick to get muted tones. a white saturation layer somewhere in the file and low contrast.
THIRTEEN
now for the actual icon. I stamp everything on a new layer and then make a new 100x100 canvas and drag the image there. (the original image is 800 by...something I think around 350? anyway) I drag it around and try to find a crop I'm happy with but I couldn't because the angle of her face made it impossible to get the horns in. so I duplicate the image and use the free transform tool to fit it into the 100px width.
then I move the original image below it and try to find a composition I like. I decided to focus on her eye because somehow I had made it into a nice green tone
>>>
I lost the .psd of the icon version so the eyes don't match but you get the idea. I stamp the image on a new layer and sharpen > fade sharpen then add a bit of brightness and contrast since it was lost in resizing (around +10/+10 I think) and voila, icon!
