Technically i believe banana trees aren't trees so you should be fine with cutting it back. also have you ever had it bear fruit?

That's what I was reading as well. It just seems like such a pity to chop it down.

I haven't had any fruit yet, though it's supposed to be unedible and would need a way longer growing period than what I've got. I read somewhere once that it can't bear fruit until it has 15 leaves, but I'm not sure if that's valid or not.

I caught Apollo using the 'trunk' as a scratching post once or twice lol... but he mostly slept in the pot around the base (I had some of that spanish moss around it so he wasn't in the dirt)
