You load fifteen updates, and what do you get?

Ok, in this case, I'm loading one update, because I went back to the studio and managed to crash Cubase twice. Oh, look! There's a new maintenance update that dropped four days ago. How *did* the software know when to start crashing?

I was in the middle of a Zoom conference with my boss, when the Internet suddenly went out. I texted him to let him know what was going on, then headed off to the basement to reboot the modem. The old modem did not seem to require this nearly as often as the new modem; this distresses me a bit.

I am periodically amazed by the improvement in the tools that are available to me as a developer now that we have moved forward from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2019.

It appears that the studio computer will not support Windows 11 due to (if nothing else) lack of TPM support. Admittedly, the beastie is 10 years old, but this is annoying.

I worry about how many of the other computers in the house are going to have the same problem, as I'm really good at nursing along older machines.

The necessary cables arrived this afternoon. I hauled my work laptop down to the basement, connected it via Thunderbolt to the Apollo unit and convinced the Apollo to downlevel itself to Firewire again. Once that was done, I was able to connect to it from the studio computer.

It appears that the audio techs who fixed my Apollo unit left it in Thunderbolt mode, not in Firewire mode. This would, in theory, not be a problem, except that you need to connect it to a computer with Thunderbolt in order to drop the firmware back to the Firewire level. And I don't own a computer with Thunderbolt.

Wow! Two actual weeks off from work. Sadly, I didn't get accomplished nearly as much as I might have hoped to. The best laid plans of mice and men, I think...

But I did manage to upgrade two computers: my home office desktop (which went swimmingly) and the studio desktop (which went about as badly as it could and come out running in the end). ( Read more... )

I had a chance to come down and play around in the studio today with the reconfigured system. I can still bollix up Cubase by installing plugins while audio is running on eight very long tracks (a full hour concert), but it actually managed to recover, so I'm going to take that as a victory.

I finally finished the computer upgrade in the studio this afternoon. The now-surplus spinning NAS disks have been inserted into the empty slots in the Synology NAS, where they can supply some more storage.
