This about sums the console wars up.

Anyway. Life moves on. Nothing dramatic at this time, though there's some stuff about Witty, and some talk of the wedding. ( Read more... )

Ah yes...My wife got her dress from a catalog. It wasn't a "wedding" dress, but it came in white and it looked fancy and only cost $100.

Mine was hand-made and about $600, but it also was in shades of deep purple and cream in a Renaissance style, so I can wear it to ren faires and the like. :)

Man a wedding is like any other event that is sponsored by corporate greed. Women have had it encouraged that if they don't have an extravagant, expensive wedding that they have been cheated somehow. I am glad we're both involved with more reasonable girls.

Indeed. I highly recommend that you guys the book "Here Comes The Bride: Women, Weddings, and the Marriage Mystique" by Jaclyn Geller before you get too deeply into planning. It's a true eye-opener. While some of her argument is lost under the sound of axes grinding (basically due to the fact that she prefers solitude to paired living), she has some truly excellent points about the ridiculous runaway greed of the wedding industry.

I fully agree that weddings don't have to cost a bazillion dollars to be wonderful and memorable. Ours cost all in all about $5000 to my parents plus about $1000 for our rings, which we paid for.

There are a couple of good books out there on having frugal weddings, and they're usually available used/cheap on Amazon. I highly recommend checking them out.

Having the wedding at your grandmother's house sounds like a fabulous idea. We held our wedding in my parents' garden (which is gorgeous because my mom's a gardening fiend) and had the reception inside. The only location cost was renting a tent and hiring the people who took our piano outside and retuned it; we borrowed folding chairs from my parents' church.

If you want any tips/pointers on inexpensive wedding plans, just ask!

By the by, if the wedding is anywhere in the time range of mid-August to mid-October next year, Lars and I will be in the states, and as long as it doesn't conflict with any of the other reasons we're in the states (Worldcon 2008, Walnut Valley Festival, and CWRU Alumni Homecoming), I promise we will do our damndest to come!
