This about sums the console wars up.

Anyway. Life moves on. Nothing dramatic at this time, though there's some stuff about Witty, and some talk of the wedding. ( Read more... )

We spent less on our wedding than I did on the ring.

Suggestions that worked for us:

-Made our own invitations.
-Went simple on the flowers...(i.e. bouquets and some basic arrangments along the rows of chairs).
-Because we had so many people coming from out of town, I negotated a block of suites for $89/night (Chicago, 1999) and rental of a banquet room for $100 (where we got married).
-FIL ran the ceremony.
-Cake was $100 and was nothing more than basic wedding sheet cake with a round cake on top and some nice piped frosting.
-Reception was held at a restaurant. Due to dietary restrictions, we opted to rent 1/2 the restaurant for a few hours and prepaid/ordered the meals.
-Had a morning wedding and lunch reception.
-No dancing/DJ (we don't dance). These days, you can get some decent speakers and hook them up to an ipod on random and do fine.
-Cheap photographer. Called around and found the best deal. $600.
-No limo ride.
-Had an open bar at the restaurant....but didn't tell any of the guests.

I think that is about it. As far as we were concerned, it was a fine wedding. People enjoyed themselves, got fed, and watched us get married. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Your wedding sounds a bit like what my husband and I did!

-Flowers were those in my mom's garden, save for a couple of baskets, as we got married in my folks' backyard. The reception was in the house, so nobody had to get in a limo/horse-drawn-carriage/whatever to go anywhere.
-Had a little round cake for us two, and then the rest was sheet cake.
-Had a sunset ceremony with only a dessert reception.
-I set up a playlist on my laptop for dancing and borrowed my foster brother's speakers.
-Had champagne for a toast (Andre at $4 a bottle, and truly, I couldn't tell the diff) and then just punch for afterwards; no other alcohol involved.
-Made the standard midwestern sugar-mints ourselves at spring break, stuck 'em in the freezer, and then pulled 'em out for the Memorial Day weekend wedding.
-I worked at JoAnn part time during the wedding planning, and so got employee discount on fabric for the wedding outfits, and scrounged dirt-cheap stuff for favors and decorations.

Many people told us it was the most beautiful wedding they'd ever seen.

The one thing I wouldn't recommend skimping on too much is photography. My folks got married extremely cheaply back in 1960, and my mother still says her one regret is that they only have snapshots of their wedding.

Ah yes...My wife got her dress from a catalog. It wasn't a "wedding" dress, but it came in white and it looked fancy and only cost $100.

Mine was hand-made and about $600, but it also was in shades of deep purple and cream in a Renaissance style, so I can wear it to ren faires and the like. :)
