Your wedding sounds a bit like what my husband and I did!
-Flowers were those in my mom's garden, save for a couple of baskets, as we got married in my folks' backyard. The reception was in the house, so nobody had to get in a limo/horse-drawn-carriage/whatever to go anywhere. -Had a little round cake for us two, and then the rest was sheet cake. -Had a sunset ceremony with only a dessert reception. -I set up a playlist on my laptop for dancing and borrowed my foster brother's speakers. -Had champagne for a toast (Andre at $4 a bottle, and truly, I couldn't tell the diff) and then just punch for afterwards; no other alcohol involved. -Made the standard midwestern sugar-mints ourselves at spring break, stuck 'em in the freezer, and then pulled 'em out for the Memorial Day weekend wedding. -I worked at JoAnn part time during the wedding planning, and so got employee discount on fabric for the wedding outfits, and scrounged dirt-cheap stuff for favors and decorations.
Many people told us it was the most beautiful wedding they'd ever seen.
The one thing I wouldn't recommend skimping on too much is photography. My folks got married extremely cheaply back in 1960, and my mother still says her one regret is that they only have snapshots of their wedding.
Mine was hand-made and about $600, but it also was in shades of deep purple and cream in a Renaissance style, so I can wear it to ren faires and the like. :)
