Beyond T'hy'la: Slash Analysis of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Novel (1/2)

Mar 02, 2011 08:59

This essay assumes you have seen Star Trek: TMP. It does not assume you have read the novel. In fact, the whole purpose of writing this essay is to show off the slashiness of the novel and entice others to read the book or at least flail over what they read here. I mean come on, just look at the cover. Don't think it's that more straight because ( Read more... )

slash, meta, their love is oh so canon, boldly slashing where i've never slashed, otp, space husbands, writing, picspam

Yeah um. I'm not gonna read the whole thing. You "lost" me at the t'hy'la bit. I'm gonna order the book now and read it and THEN read your analysis. Luckily I've only watched the movie once, so I can probably read the book with some of my own imagery in mind.

Gee this looks interesting though. I'll be back ;)

I always saw the transporter accident involving Lori (Human; Kirk's lover and companion) and Sonack (Vulcan; science officer and representative of Starfleet) as very obvious metaphor for the futilely of Kirk's search for a replacement for Spock.

There is no possible way to find (or create if we want to be gross and literal with the transporter accident) someone that could take Spock's place in Kirks life (human/vulcan; lover/companion/science officer)

*flails* OMG, I SO DID NOT THINK OF IT THAT WAY. But it's so true because why did it happen to be those two people? I must include this straight away and credit thee.

a little spastic fangirl dance

Um, you probably don't know this, but "spastic" is a fairly offensive slur in British English. (About on the level of "retarded".) I'd feel more comfortable if you didn't use it.

I'm working on a response to the rest of your post - which I totally agree with by the way! - but I wanted to point that out now.

Huh, the more you know. I'll change it, but just so you know I didn't mean offense and over here it's harmless, so just realize that language will differ and I'm sure a good majority of other brits would realize straight away the differences in slang like you and would understand how I meant the word.

I know you didn't mean to offend anyone, and I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything - like I said, I figured you probably didn't know. Thank you for changing it. :)

No biggie, and you never know if someone with a grudge will read it and rant at me for being a bigot, so I like to cool fires before they have a change to even start. :)

I couldn't do serious meta, and I've tried. :P But yes! That part was actually a last-minute observation and it almost makes me glad I took so long writing this meta because it's just too good to leave out and it goes to show that you can analyze this book thoroughly and STILL find shit to talk about.
