Emmys

I’m having this weird DNW reaction to Downton Abbey’s Emmy noms. Not because I don’t love the show, but because it’s British, and despite the fact that it’s co-bankrolled by an NBC subsidary, it just seems odd to have a foreign show taking so many major noms at the Emmys. I dunno. I mean, I’m foreign myself (Canadian, obviously), and I love England ( Read more... )

let me tell you how i really feel, random tv, homeland, fnl

I pay almost no attention to the Emmys, so I can't really say much. While I like that British shows are being recognised (I find some people still think the US is the beginning and end of all television), I do agree. Like the BAFTAs. There's an international category, but otherwise all the nominated shows are British, or are a UK/Other country co-production like Wallander. It should be the case for the Emmys. Like, if Torchwood were nominated, it could be in the other categories because it's a BBC/Starz co-production, but Doctor Who could only be nominated for the international category.

And Downton has dropped in quality this year, though Thomas and O'Brien are still flawless bitches.

I think the reason UK shows getting nominated for miniseries isn't as much of a problem is because our shows are much shorter, season wise, in general, so we just make more miniseries than the US. Like Luther. Over here, that would be nominated for best drama, not best miniseries. (Is Luther nominated this time? I fucking love Luther.)

Yeah, I think putting DA as a series is problematic for a few reasons.

O'Brien and Thomas are definitely flawless bitches! :D

I'm bummed that both Jimmys got a nomination, but Craig didn't. Leno didn't get a nom, though, so that's a bit of comfort.

On the one hand, I know the ExecProd of "Kimmel", so I'm thrilled for her. She's the greatest thing since sliced bread -- honestly! And I know a lot of the Fallon staff since they used to be Conan staff and most of them worked with me on the Jon Stewart show in the 90s. But one of my best friends is a writer for CraigF and he's AMAZING. They all love him on that staff. AND, he writes his own monologue, unlike the rest of the world. *hearts* him.

If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a question. (And I hope you don't mind, either, Boobs.) What exactly do the writers on TLLS write? Craig writes his own monologue, and I follow Josh Robert Thompson, who says Geoff's and Craig's interaction/dialogue is unplanned and in real time. So other than spots like Michael Caine in Space, what do the writers write? Also, I agree that Craig is amazing. I was fortunate enough to attend a taping (pre-Geoff :( ), and I loved him.

I'm happy for your friends' sakes. :)

ETA (sorry): The email and Twitter segments aren't scripted, and Craig always tears up the blue interview questions cards, so I can't think of what the writers write, though I know it can't possibly be that unplanned. Also, I don't mean disrespect to your friend. :)

I don't mind (if Keira doesn't!). The writers on TLLS only really have to write the comedy skits because Craig is so awesome and likes to write his own monologue stuff. But that doesn't mean they don't have a part in the process. Having a writing team is more than just writing your jokes for you (well, I'll keep Leno out of this scenario). A good host keeps talented and funny people around to bring up the quality ideas to talk about. To spark the ideas that Craig will focus on, etc. If you play tennis with a great tennis player, it improves your game. Get it ( ... )

I am so routing for the Homeland cast. The show has set records for not only the network for the Emmy's themselves. Homeland for all the awards.

Honestly, I feel almost the exact opposite. I have less of a problem with British shows that air on PBS/are co-funded by American companies getting nominated than I do with shows that air on HBO or Showtime or whatever. Relatively fewer people in the U.S. have premium channels whereas virtually everyone has PBS, whether or not they actually watch it. That's a huge part of the Emmy audience, keeping in mind that probably the majority of TV viewers do not obtain those shows in less-than-legal ways and might not have even heard of them, that just won't care or connect to large chunks of the nominees ( ... )

Hmm. I'd never thought about the issue of people not having the cable channels. I've been downloading or buying the DVDs for so long that it never crossed my mind. Interesting point.

there's still the argument that there's a huge difference in terms of content that can be included and money that can be spent on talent, when talking about premium channel shows, and so the qualitative comparisons really aren't fair either, IMO.

Hmm. I think there's a difference in content that can be included due to ratings regulations, but that the networks can certainly pony up the money for quality when they want to, so I don't buy that one. The networks are completely capable of creating and airing quality, Emmy-worthy programs. But often those programs aren't hits with wide audiences who prefer crap. :/

I agree, DA should not be nominated as a series. Certainly not if American Horror Story is being classed a mini-series! That's ridic.
