Emmys

I’m having this weird DNW reaction to Downton Abbey’s Emmy noms. Not because I don’t love the show, but because it’s British, and despite the fact that it’s co-bankrolled by an NBC subsidary, it just seems odd to have a foreign show taking so many major noms at the Emmys. I dunno. I mean, I’m foreign myself (Canadian, obviously), and I love England ( Read more... )

Honestly, I feel almost the exact opposite. I have less of a problem with British shows that air on PBS/are co-funded by American companies getting nominated than I do with shows that air on HBO or Showtime or whatever. Relatively fewer people in the U.S. have premium channels whereas virtually everyone has PBS, whether or not they actually watch it. That's a huge part of the Emmy audience, keeping in mind that probably the majority of TV viewers do not obtain those shows in less-than-legal ways and might not have even heard of them, that just won't care or connect to large chunks of the nominees.

And since I'm more of the opinion that "Who cares about public opinion? Awards should be based on legit quality!" there's still the argument that there's a huge difference in terms of content that can be included and money that can be spent on talent, when talking about premium channel shows, and so the qualitative comparisons really aren't fair either, IMO.

Also, I love Lady Mary and totally want Michelle Dockery to win. (And Martin Freeman, though I think all the Sherlock noms should have been for Reichenbach Fall.)

That said, I don't agree with the decision to move DA to series rather than miniseries. It still has fewer episodes than most programs. It still airs more irregularly. And even if it's come back for multiple runs, so has Sherlock and so will American Horror Story. There should be consistency in how things are considered.

Also, mostly I'm annoyed by seeing the same names and shows over and over again. I want more variety!

Hmm. I'd never thought about the issue of people not having the cable channels. I've been downloading or buying the DVDs for so long that it never crossed my mind. Interesting point.

Hmm. I think there's a difference in content that can be included due to ratings regulations, but that the networks can certainly pony up the money for quality when they want to, so I don't buy that one. The networks are completely capable of creating and airing quality, Emmy-worthy programs. But often those programs aren't hits with wide audiences who prefer crap. :/

I agree, DA should not be nominated as a series. Certainly not if American Horror Story is being classed a mini-series! That's ridic.
