Kick it Kowalski

Damned clock don't shut up
So it's roll to the side
Smack it down,
Try on a smile for the day,
Your game face,
Sweet or sly, or
Feral...
Whatever the face
That's no lie.
Just don't be a frown,
Don't let the whole world know
What's going down
Behind the coffee buzz
The sugar high.

Wanna be still asleep,
But that ain't gonna happen.
Bounce up at the ( Read more... )

I like this -- gives a nice sense of kinetic-Kowalski; his energy and mood swings; the way he tries so hard except when he's not giving much of a damn; the combination of boyish and macho; and the way in which, on the one hand, a lot of how he behaves is performance, but on the other hand, he largely seems to believe in his own performance most of the time. (Which, hm, is a lot of stuff to capture in a fairly short poem. :) )

(If you like, I'd also be happy to randomly chatter with you about Kowalski, as a character, because geeking about such things is fun. :) But that seems mostly a separate topic from responding to the poem.)

Holy shit, wow. It definitely has his beat; he seems to move, speak, and exist to that same beat, all the time, and this is his.

Thank you guys.

What I'm concerned about is capturing his energy, but also his voice. If youse can think of any fic you could point me with Kowalski drivern dialogue I'd be glad. I've been immerse in RayV for over a month now, and trying to shift the energy across to K is a bit of a shift... I really admire guys who can get them both right at the same time, but I'm going to leave that challenge for a while now!

Hm, thinking about memorable stories/browsing through bookmarks, I'm realizing that the ones that spring to mind tend to be more about Kowalski *narration* than necessarily dialogue. (Not that I haven't read stories with good RK dialogue voice, but apparently what I tend to come back to has other attributes.) And a lot of them tend to tilt fairly far away from the goofy side of the goofy vs. angsty/manly/sensitive balance (certainly I do this myself; I'm not good at goofy and that's not where my interest lies, but I do think it's an important element of the character ( ... )

Wow, that's fascinating... and I've read two pieces by Speranza, one of which I loved (eight sessions) and the other of which I admired tremendously as a piece of work, but which felt as though the characters (particularly Fraser) had drifted too far from canon. I don't mind slash, but it needs to be in character. Eight sessions is definitely something I will read again, and I'm looking forward to reading the other pieces you mention ( ... )

You should totally hit up Sossity, if there's some way to message her through Ao3. She writes an amazing RayK voice, and I can't recommend her enough.

I absolutely agree that Fraser is a lot darker than his "persona" would suggest... He keeps himself as tightly wound as he does because he knows how dark he is. And that's really, really dark. I think it was the angry sex thing that upset me in Kowalski is Bleeding, which I otherwise really liked. I couldn't quite imagine Fraser doing at least one of the things which happened in that, but perhaps that's my own personal problem... certainly it was a compulsively readable very very strong story, and I will read it again ( ... )

Hm, yeah, I remember Kowalski Is Bleeding as being...I don't know, odd for me; I didn't get it/bond with it the way that I did most of her other stuff that I've read. Haven't gone back and re-read to figure out why (though I did read her commentary on the writing of it, which was interesting). So I don't remember it well enough to have an opinion about the angry sex element ( ... )

Thank you for all that desiree... as you can probably tell I'm new to online fandom, and still haven't worked out proper protocols and procedures. For example, I had to go and re edit my tags on Childhood Monsters, because I'd put as relationships Fraser/Vecchio... which isn't what happens in that story! I thought it meant relationship as in friendship. d'oh ( ... )

Oh, I liked this! It definitely gives me a sense of him. Is it inspired by the beginning of "Eclipse"?
