Kick it Kowalski

Damned clock don't shut up
So it's roll to the side
Smack it down,
Try on a smile for the day,
Your game face,
Sweet or sly, or
Feral...
Whatever the face
That's no lie.
Just don't be a frown,
Don't let the whole world know
What's going down
Behind the coffee buzz
The sugar high.

Wanna be still asleep,
But that ain't gonna happen.
Bounce up at the ( Read more... )

Thank you guys.

What I'm concerned about is capturing his energy, but also his voice. If youse can think of any fic you could point me with Kowalski drivern dialogue I'd be glad. I've been immerse in RayV for over a month now, and trying to shift the energy across to K is a bit of a shift... I really admire guys who can get them both right at the same time, but I'm going to leave that challenge for a while now!

Hm, thinking about memorable stories/browsing through bookmarks, I'm realizing that the ones that spring to mind tend to be more about Kowalski *narration* than necessarily dialogue. (Not that I haven't read stories with good RK dialogue voice, but apparently what I tend to come back to has other attributes.) And a lot of them tend to tilt fairly far away from the goofy side of the goofy vs. angsty/manly/sensitive balance (certainly I do this myself; I'm not good at goofy and that's not where my interest lies, but I do think it's an important element of the character ( ... )

Wow, that's fascinating... and I've read two pieces by Speranza, one of which I loved (eight sessions) and the other of which I admired tremendously as a piece of work, but which felt as though the characters (particularly Fraser) had drifted too far from canon. I don't mind slash, but it needs to be in character. Eight sessions is definitely something I will read again, and I'm looking forward to reading the other pieces you mention ( ... )

You should totally hit up Sossity, if there's some way to message her through Ao3. She writes an amazing RayK voice, and I can't recommend her enough.

I'll do a search of her fanworks, read any Kowalski. Right now I'm in speranza's domain.

Wow, she's good...

So I hear. I've tried to read her stuff, but I honestly couldn't quite get into it. Still, she must be something else to hit that status!

Some of her stuff I don't get, but I must admit, I loved Chicago's Most Wanted (even if it does end up utterly AU) and thought she handled Fraser going dark in a deliciously due Southy manner... I nearly died laughing when Ray commented on the tuna casserole with prison suits baked into it, a proof of Fraser being behind the planning of the escape, because it was so "nutritous," Ray being quoted on the front pages of the Chicago papers as saying "you gotta be sh..tting me," and Welsh's response, that they may be inarticulate bozos, but the whole world doesn't have to know that ( ... )

::grins!:: Hey, as long as you enjoy it, that's the most important part. It sounds like a fun story when summarized like that!

Eight Sessions is another one of Speranza's I'm very fond of. I think I know what you mean when you feel that some of her Fraser versions are fairly far from canon; she does do a lot of exploring of the darker/meaner/more domineering aspects of Fraser (as well as, any slash story is going to have to address Fraser's sexuality in ways that are at the very least not present in the canon). But even her more disturbing versions of Fraser feel very grounded in canon to me, because...bah OK, I'm not going to be able to articulate this quickly or concisely, and I need to get back to work. :) I think canon-Fraser is a) multi-faceted, with layers and levels of performing his persona, b) presented inconsistently, or c) both. Some of Speranza's stories draw more on the parts of Fraser that the show put there but didn't consistently acknowledge, and go in darker directions that the show seemed to really be going for -- but I think the show did sow those seeds ( ... )

Have taken a pass through Lair of the White Wolf and compiled a list of British-isms for you; how would you like it delivered? (Posting to the internet seems, I don't know, odd; or perhaps I just don't want my out-of-my-butt opinions on quite such a permanent public record. :) )
