Kick it Kowalski

Damned clock don't shut up
So it's roll to the side
Smack it down,
Try on a smile for the day,
Your game face,
Sweet or sly, or
Feral...
Whatever the face
That's no lie.
Just don't be a frown,
Don't let the whole world know
What's going down
Behind the coffee buzz
The sugar high.

Wanna be still asleep,
But that ain't gonna happen.
Bounce up at the ( Read more... )

Hm, yeah, I remember Kowalski Is Bleeding as being...I don't know, odd for me; I didn't get it/bond with it the way that I did most of her other stuff that I've read. Haven't gone back and re-read to figure out why (though I did read her commentary on the writing of it, which was interesting). So I don't remember it well enough to have an opinion about the angry sex element. :)

A thing I have noticed about DS fanfic is that, because fanfic is all about playing with a million different versions and interpretations off of the same start point, there are the darker and lighter Fraser interpretations, and I can enjoy and buy into both, despite the fact that of course they're not consistent with *each other* -- and I don't have to worry about which ones are true to my head-canon. (And, in fact, I can write stories that are not consistent with each other *or* with my head-canon, as long as they are true to...something. I do feel there are constraints and boundaries; it's a game with rules; but I don't know that I know exactly what I think the rules and boundaries are for me, personally.) Because I think there is a lot of room to interpret just how much or little darkness there is in Fraser, based on the evidence from canon.

What I actually popped back here to say (as opposed to replying to what you said :) ) is: since you seem to be actively interested in getting constructive feedback on your work, have you considered having someone beta-read your pieces before you post them? My (very limited!) sense of the online culture is that most people tend to only give positive comments when they're responding to a posted fic, whereas beta-reading is the place deemed appropriate for actual critique (and offers more scope for in-depth and/or nitpicky detail feedback). Of course, the problem with getting a beta is you have to know people you feel comfortable asking to do such a thing, because it's actual work and a personal favor (my personal perception here; I have very little idea how people in the community in general think about it).

(By the way: when you reply to comments on LJ, if you do it by hitting the Reply button on the comment you're replying to, rather than starting a new thread, then people like me who have comment-notification turned on will get the message that you've said something to us. :) )

Thank you for all that desiree... as you can probably tell I'm new to online fandom, and still haven't worked out proper protocols and procedures. For example, I had to go and re edit my tags on Childhood Monsters, because I'd put as relationships Fraser/Vecchio... which isn't what happens in that story! I thought it meant relationship as in friendship. d'oh!

Yes, I really do need to find a beta, and I've got some friends who have been very supportive of me, two in particular, but I have been getting "beta" as it were on fanfic, which is where I've been posting my first drafts, then tweaking and twitching and fixing based on what I hear back from there. It's qutie frightening writing it that way though, because I keep expecting to mess up. When I'm writing I try to get one chapter a day, and just run at it head down, and hope it's not too much of a mess. So the tweaking comes later, and what you see on AO3 is what I'm happier with.

Rideforever has suggested she might beta for me (she's been really really good with pointing me to resources, and research etc) so I think I'll ask her again when she gets back. But yes, I do want actual feedback, criticism that will help me get better. So, you're right, beta is the way to go. Thank you!
