Sophie has seen a lot of strange things since she arrived in Chicago.
She's seen things that she now never realized she could explain, she never wanted to be able to explain, and things that she just plainly never wanted to see again. But none of them has caught her interest as much as the man who tried to take on a bus with a sword.
She watches carefully as he moves over onto the sidewalk, and then slowly starts to make her approach. It's impossibly obvious that he's a new wanderer, which means it's time for Sophie to step in before he attracts too much attention.
Richard whirls around to face the voice behind him. He studies the woman's face for a moment before looking at her strange garments. He's not comfortable with any of this. Not even in this Old World that he had been brought to has he seen anything like this.
"You mean it's not a creature? But something built?"
She's giving him a bit of a measure up herself. He's definitely out of his time, if not a completely polar universe. She isn't sure what exactly to tell him, but she can at least start with the basics.
"Oh, yes. That's a machine. It's meant to help transport."
"Like a wagon. But I see no horse?" He focuses his attention completely on her, because it is easier to focus on one thing that makes no sense than to try to sort out all of them at once. He can tackle the small issues until he needs to piece together the larger ones.
Mark already feels that this wanderer is the coolest person in the world. Okay, it might be a slight exaggeration, but someone who wields a sword and wears those clothes? They are obviously awesome. He knows people in this universe who use swords on occasion. They sometimes work better on the monsters that fall through than guns and bullets do for instance.
However, it is clear that this wanderer is new from some universe much different than this one given the fact that he is attacking a bus.
He stares before his brain kicks into action, and Mark rushes over to help when thankfully the man does get out of the street before he's hit by anything. "Hey, you... okay? That's actually a... It's for travelling. People control it," Mark says with a small smile though there's concern in his gaze too. "You're... probably wondering where you are."
"You mean it's domesticated?" Richard turns his gaze back to the blackened earth, watching as the smaller shining animals darted past. Oddly, they never strayed to the slightly higher ground that he stood upon.
"All of them? Tamed like horses- But the people are... inside..?" Confusion is painted over the man's face as he struggles to understand what he's being told. This place, this whole place is so different than anything he's ever seen.
Mark smiles a little when he calls it domesticated. That's such an adorable way of putting it. "Yes, basically. There's no harm that will come from them unless... you stand in front of one without giving them the time and space to stop."
Granted, there's car accidents too but he's not going to overwhelm Richard. "All of them." Another smile at the 'tamed like horses' part of it. "People are inside. They own those, and they get from one place to the next with them. They're made out of metal." And a lot more, but again, he doesn't want to overwhelm. "It was really valiant of you to try to protect everyone from them though."
Richard draws one eyebrow up. "So it isn't an animal at all. It's a carriage, propelled by magic." This is clearly the most logical assumption to jump to. He glances at the strange and fascinating scene before him, now watching as they roll by, noticing the wheels. While watching, Richard slides his sword back into its hilt. He turns and addresses the man before him.
"It was foolish. Dressing it up doesn't change what it is." Richard smiles, resting his hand on the top of the sword's hilt. "But it's kind of you to educate me on the truth of things." He sticks out his free hand. "My name is Richard."
Elena Gilbert is no stranger to the... well, strange.
Her whole life for the past year has been nothing but strange. Not to mention perilous and often filled with one revelation after another in brutal succession. Alas, she has never quite seen anything like this, and it isn't hard to put two and two together about who this man is, where he may be from, and why she needs to go over to him.
She swallows back the small surprise that always comes with seeing this, before she takes a step forward. It isn't in her to just leave someone that will need answers, that will need help. "Hey," she says quietly, her expression a mixture of concern and earnestness.
Richard's reflexes cause him to turn suddenly, sword still drawn and ready to fight any new and strange foe. What he sees is a petite young woman. She reminds him of the novices at the Palace, which causes Richard to regard her with a bit of suspicion. If she is from the Palace, then it's possible that she has something to do with this.
"Confusion does not begin to scratch the surface. What is this place?"
Elena freezes in place, holding both hands up while her gaze drops toward the tip of the blade. She swallows thickly, lifting her gaze back up to meet his. It's unwavering, somehow. Despite the circumstances, and she doesn't blame him for the confusion.
"You're in Chicago, and I only want to help you," she says. There's a lot to explain, but there is... a sword to the face.
"Chicago?" He repeats, the word sounding very foreign, but that's to be expected. He doesn't know much about the Old World. "And how far is Tanimura from here?" He doesn't both wondering how he got there. That part doesn't matter.
He realizes how uneasy she looks and lowers his sword slightly, but there's a look in his eyes that makes it quite easy to see that just because the point of the blade is not aimed at her, does not make him any less dangerous.
Jonathan is walking to the library, lost to his thoughts, when the sound of a bus horn drags him from them. He looks in the direction of the sound and is greeted by a very strange sight.
Several fired synapses later he realizes that the man in the road just tried to take on a bus with a sword, therefore clearly isn't native to Chicago 2011, and that he should probably say something before someone, particularly the new wanderer, gets hurt.
"You seem a bit lost." He says simply as he steps up next to Richard, now on the sidewalk. "I may be able to help with that." He gives a disarming smile, coming across as friendly.
Still on the defensive, Richard turns quickly, his blade still drawn as a new voice addresses him. He tenses his muscles, coiled and ready to spring forth an attack. After appraising the source of the voice, he relaxes only slightly.
"A woodsman is never lost, not truly." Giving up how very strange this place is to him will only hurt Richard in the long run.
Jonathan looks down at the blade a moment before looking back up to Richard.
"Well, we don't seem to be in the woods." He comments dryly before realizing it was probably inappropriate, considering the situation. He lets out a soft breath before adjusting his glasses. "I apologize. That was... inappropriate. You must be very confused." He says.
"Do you know where you are?" He asks calmly, still very aware of where the sword is.
Richard answers the comment about not being in the woods with just a steely glare.
"Somewhere near Taniumura, most likely. The Sisters will be looking for me. You'd be better off just pointing me back in the direction of the Palace. You know how testy those Sisters can be." He says, hoping to get his bearings sooner rather than later.
