I'm sort of with you. I don't want to invest too much emotion in it and it's still kind of raw. I'm going under the 'there probably will be no S4 and if there is they won't bring back Ianto per se but as flashbacks'
The interview with GDL was kind of vague where he said 'you never know it is sci-fi'
Right now I'm just playing with my TS pics and sticking my fingers in my ears that COE didn't happen. *looks at new fav icon*
I think I might be tolerant of Ianto back in a form that wasn't his character being alive, if only for the fact that GDL would still be on screen, and that it would show the impact the character had.
TS pics have helped, after I screamed enough to get them. I like my pic with Gareth :)
And yeah, I think flashbacks would be the way to go but I really hope that they are newly filmed 'flashbacks' and not actual ones from the shows in the can. They don't have to pay GDL for those!
Seriously, I think we lost out on a lot between seasons 2 and 3 because they had to make "event television." And really, I blame the BBC and their budget problems that made the show only 5 episodes and therefore forced them into this sort of format. But we got nothing as far as how the team dealt with everything that happened after season 2...and there was TONS to deal with.
as positive as all the charity drives are, and i think it's cathartic for ppl to throw themselves into stuff like this to help feel better, i don't see it actually influencing whether they bring him back or not
if i had money, i'd donate to the charities, but i'm not participating in any "Save Ianto" campaigns - actually, i feel it would further cheapen the death they gave him if they just magically bring him back (even though i want to see him on my screen again and forever!)
so, instead i'm throwing myself into constructive outlets - like the virtual series which, so far judging by all the ideas we've got going, is looking to be really awesome hopefully it will be well received by fandom, too
I kind of agree. Much as I want him back, I do feel like it would cheapen his death even further. Though part of me asks if I'd really give a shit about that if Ianto was around again. I am mourning that character hardcore.
And fandom has always trumped canon for me. I guess I just have to keep the perspective that. I mean, honestly, I started watching this show AFTER season 2 aired. The entirety of my time in this fandom has been when TW wasn't actually airing, with the exception of super recently. Though, in the same regard, it's like I never really got to enjoy canon.
Where are the virtual season convos going on? I told Tina I'd help with non-creative things and did the little intro document through gmail. I feel like a bum not having anything to contribute idea-wise. My brain just doesn't work that way. Same with the movie project...I really really want to help, but worry I'm just not useful without being creative.
I may do something next week. Although the death scene was really great in terms of acting, I felt they did it for shock value or a cop out for a heteronormative ending, etc.
I don't care how they bring him back so long as he's there to help Jack rebuild himself.
They can do reincarnation Ianto of the future! (I've been clinging to a fic series that did that, recently).
Ianto's death was a plot point meant to drive Jack to have the ability to do some terrible and necessary things, based on the interviews. And yes, great, Ianto had that impact on Jack, but still, his death was just used as the catalyst for plot. Ugh. At least I did actually really like the death scene. Gorgeous acting.
I feel that Jack would have done what he did anyway, regardless of whether Ianto died because of previous guilt from 1965 and the fact that he can make those difficult decisions.
So it still seems to me that the death was pointless. Horrible for Jack because no one else seems to understand him and support him like Ianto did.
So I don't buy what they're saying in the interviews. There's staying true to your craft and thinking about marketability. Of course there's also if the audience isn't convinced it was necessary it either A) wasn't or B) you didn't do a good enough job of convincing the audience.
Good point. I do think Jack would have done it anyway. It would have been interesting to see Ianto's reaction to it, since it's a horrible act, but he did tell him to stand up and fight.
Yeah, all of the "we had to stay true to the story" is BS to me. They were on BBC1, making event TV, and they bought into the cliches of what to do in that scenario. Giant cop out.
If RTD had left any door open for a Ianto resurrection at all, maybe I would hum a different tune, but it sort of feels like that door was closed, leaned on, locked, nailed shut, had its doorknobs removed, and the key melted down for scrap metal. Yeah
( ... )
I've still been popping in to torchwood house every once in a while, but I've not been wandering around nearly as much as before; I just don't have the heart/stomach for it. (New boyfriend is helping with having less time, too, but still).
I'm still going to watch next week, mainly because I haven't been able to bring myself to re-watch them yet.
Ditto on the lack of heart/stomach. I have to stay where it's safe, right now. (New boyfriend, eh? How fun!)
I'll catch it in full when we do the little viewing party in Ohio, presuming that'll still happen. Watching it with fellow fans will be nice, and that way I'll actually make it through the entire thing. I have not watched all of the 4th and 5th episode, to date.
Haven't been to the full TW community because I don't think I could handle wank in the headspace I'm in. Maybe I'll go back someday, but I don' think I'll try to get caught up.
It is quite fun ;-) Novel, too - haven't dated a boy in like 8 years. Fun times, fun times.

I'd like some 'flashbacks' of post S2 and pre S3.

same here, but then it would make CoE even more pointless, so i doubt they're ever going to do that

But would I watch? You betcha!

I do remember you mentioning that a former GF had gotten you into U2, am I right?
Ohio is...mid-August, I think? Have we firmed that up yet, anyone?
