ETA: Wait. I thought Amy Acker had joined the cast of Drive? I'm very disappointed by her absence in
these promo pics. BOO, HISS.
Thanks to
helpwess and
jascott I spent many hours tonight watching episodes of Man vs Wild. Did you know that pound for pound termites contain more protein than beef or fish? NOW YOU DO.
Also, check out this wicked retro urban photography
by Fred Herzog. If only I could just use the private jet to pop over to Vancouver for the weekend I'd love to see
his exhibit in person.
And, fuck it, I'm just going to post this now even though it's late, and I still need to tweak a few things, because if I wait any longer I'll lose my nerve again as I've been doing all week already. See, even though some of you (what's up, old school VM fans?) have witnessed this level of crazy before (possibly many times before), I'm still self-conscious about pulling back yet another one of the layers from the onion of my craziness. Thing is? Once I start paying attention to this sort of thing the only thing I can do to get it out of my system is a picspam. So, without further ado, I present to you:
The Motels and Inns of Supernatural
1x01: First we have John's psycho messy room. It amuses me that he appears to be more of a slob than his boys. Though I suspect they were going for a suspenseful effect rather than making a statement on the normal living habits of papa Winchester. Besides, he was having demon issues at the time. Like, moreso than usual.
Side note: The boys enter this room with only the clothing on their backs. However, this is the room where Dean takes a shower, and when he emerges he's wearing clean clothes. Which appeared out of thin air? Or did Sam go and get them like the obedient and accommodating little brother he is? Wouldn't it have been easier to just shower in your own room, Dean?
1x03 - The Lakefront Motel: Aka the motel Amy Acker recommended. Aka the girl Dean tried to pick up with the line "kids are great".
1x04 #1 - Escanaba Motel: That shot of Dean's legs was necessary... for... um... illuminating important things. About sheets.
1x04 #2: I find it amusing that in the same episode they have two different hotel rooms in two different locations with the same bedding. Props and whatnot are bound to be re-used, but maybe they should be spread it out a bit across episodes, yes? Not that there are many people out there actually noticing, of course. And I could be wrong. They could just be eerily similar. *g*
1x05: I love the divider in this room. Circles, yay! Reminds me a bit of
a mirror I have. Except, wouldn't that divider, and also the light fixture above the table be made of glass, and therefore be potential gateways for Bloody Mary? Wait, why am I nitpicking and focusing on circles when I could be noticing how lucky that girl is to be getting such close attention from our boys? So she has Bloody Mary after her, IT BALANCES OUT.
1x09 -
Sleep Easy Motel: I have an odd affection for just how fugly this room is. It's HIDEOUS, but it's purposefully hideous which makes it fun. And there's sort of a colour scheme going on. Though the orange and green Aztec patterned lamp is slightly at odds with the bright green and purple leaf patterned wallpaper. But hey, what are you gonna do? It is a cheap motel, after all.
1x10-11: I like that sometimes the hotel rooms are used to connect (as in this case) or distance episodes temporally. But, more importantly, that red sure is pretty! I'm pretty much a fan any time red is used because it still manages to pop despite the technical darkness of the show. Speaking of which, at first I was annoyed at how often the motel rooms were dark. I figured the show was dark enough already, couldn't they give us some decent lighting indoors at the very least? But then it occurred to me that cheap motels don't have decent lighting, so that takes care of that.
1x12 #1: Okay, this one I love. LOVE IT. Not only was Faith responsible for pushing me over the edge as far as the show is concerned, but this is the first motel room I obsessed over. How can you not love the pairing of that awesome lime green paneling with navy blue floral wallpaper? Or that hideous bedding? Or that incredibly ugly lamp behind Dean that reminds me of either an insect or a watermelon depending on my mood at any given point. But the real kicker? The one that really knocks this sucker out of the park? That wall hanging above the beds. Just look at that thing.
WHAT IS THAT? And more importantly, who on earth would feel comfortable sleeping under it? Okay, the Winchesters if no one else, but my point still stands. That is a thing of pure nightmares, right there.
1x12 #2: This is another one that I like. Possibly just because we get to see so much of it. But I do love the wallpaper, as far as loud wallpaper on Supernatural goes. And once again we have another interesting wall hanging, though this one's not half as frightening as the last. And I enjoy the yellow bedding and curtains against that absolutely putrid wall colour in the bed area.
1x13: Now this one I love in an "it's actually kind of pretty and funky" way. Love the green aged paneling on the wall. Love the blue bedding, and what looks to be tin at the heads of the beds. Love the records on the walls, and the retro clock, and that hilarious bird on the table. It's a fun room. And it doesn't hurt that we get to watch the boys dressing themselves in suits in this room. Nope. Not at all. What room?
Also, note the pizza boxes. This picspam wouldn't be complete without a nod to the littered food remnants, maps, and hunting research scattered in just about every room the boys stay in.
1x14 #1: Not much to say about this one. It's a motel room! And there's Dean all sleepy and Sam all crazy with vision angst! Hooray!
1x14 #2 -
Escanaba Motel: Here we have the first over the top motel room. I mean, there are birch trees inside the room! That's definitely taking the outdoors theme to a place. This is also the first time we see excessive to the point of hilarity use of taxidermy. Deer antlers and fish are one thing, but there is a bore head mounted on the wall! I also love that everything in this room right down to the lamps and the bedding are woodland themed. Thumbs up!
1x16 -
Danny's Inn: Not much to say about this one. Love the green wall colour. It's a very bare room as Sam needs space to do that cool flare cannister rolling across the floor move. I have a theory that this is the same room (though altered and re-dressed, of course) used for the flashbacks in Something Wicked. But possibly only because I've spent more time staring at these images than any one person should.
1x17 -
Wyeth's Western Inn: Cowboy theme! Guys, there is an armadillo by the bathroom door. AN ARMADILLO. There's a lot to look at in this room. The cactus in the corner. The wallpaper. Even the chair and the bedding have cowboys on them. And I love the way it looks like Dean has enormous horns when he leans against the ones above his bed. I'd really like to know just how common it is for a hotel room to actually look anything like this.
1x18 #1 -
2400 Court Motel: This one has a bit of a 70's vibe, yes? And, look, it's Sam's purple greyhound t-shirt! Love that shirt.
1x18 #2 -
The Kingpin Motel: BOWLING THEME! Possibly my second favourite room ever on the show. Love the whole retro vibe (nice hair, John), and the attention to detail is impressive. Those are bowling pin lamps, guys! And the bowling dividers are hilarious. And even the curtains have little bowlers and bowling pins on them. Also this is the room where we see Sam watching Thundercats, so, how could I not love it? Thundercats, Thundercats, Thundercats, ho!
1x19 - The Boogie Inn: MY FAVOURITE. How could it not be? There's just no way the set decorators don't have fun playing with these rooms. If you tell me otherwise I just won't believe you. And this is the first room that actually evokes a response from the boys. I'd love to know if that was something the director added in the moment. I just love everything funky and ridiculous about this room. But more than anything I love that both boys saw fit to wear plaid while staying in this room. I like to think no girl in her right mind would ever choose to wear a pattern against that backdrop.
1x20-1x21: The thing I love about this room is that, intentional or not, it reflects the presence of John. It's warm and rugged and we see the boys sleeping comfortably in the presence of their father.
1x21-22: Another busy mish-mash of a room. Just on the walls alone we've got loud wallpaper, faux stone paneling, and wood paneling. I had to double check the episodes to make sure it was even the same room between Salvation and Devil's Trap.
AND THAT'S THAT! The motels/hotels/inns of Supernatural! Except, that's still not entirely that. There's one bit more. Because, after staring at these images for so long I couldn't help but notice the re-use of a few props. I'm not going to post all of the examples I noticed, because this entry is already too long, but I will post a few of my favourite examples. Warning: once you start paying attention to this it's hard to stop.
