From experience, any time a friendship or romantic partnership is formed, there's always some level of risk. Some relationships stand the test of time, while others develop strife at varying times. Since we cannot predict the future, one cannot know where it will lead.
I think everyone has experienced the kind of difficulty that you describe; hardly anyone is exempt from it. Thus, it's a gamble.
