It's so PRETTY outside!!

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous, and today is, too, so I've taken advantage of it and am gardening my little heart out. It's so much fun! We got some woodchips to put around the perimeter of the backyard to keep "mudfoot" (Abby) from tracking in every bit of squishy stuff from outside when it rains, and I got a little extra to use in the front ( Read more... )

Haha! I really don't know what I'm doing either. :) There is only a very brief time during Spring when the gardening bug hits me, and if I don't do it *right then* I won't do anything for the year. We get a TON of rain in Spring and Fall, so if I don't do gardening stuff before that starts, all the weeds start going crazy, and I lose my window.

Sounds fun! I've been thinking about getting some 'potted' plants to sit on my patio. I live in a Townhouse so we have people who manage the bushes, grass, etc. I'd hate to plant some pretty flowers and they mess them up. So I'll have to settle for some potted plants.

There are some with really pretty foliage like hostas that you might try. I should get a picture of our one house plant sometime. That thing would survive a nuclear holocaust. We've had it since we moved in 5 years ago and I may water the poor thing once a month. I seriously doubt there's any soil left in the pot. I'm not saying you need something as hearty as I do, but it's a terrific starter plant! :) I'll try to get a pic sometime soon.

Sounds like you are making a lot of headway with your gardening! I wish we owned our house so I would be more motivated to get things done. But our rental home has a HUGE yard, both front and back, and it started out as a MESS when we moved in, and though we have made a lot of progress, it's difficult when you don't have time or money! Do you have a big yard?

Not really. And, we live on a hill, so both our front and back yards are mostly taken up with unusable hilly areas. We have about a 25' x 25' square of fenced-in area for the dog off the back porch, and the rest is up and down.

And, our front yard has 17 steps' worth of hill up to our front porch with 2 humongous old icky pine-needley trees that I have to work around. I've built the garden area around the front porch and along the front of the house around the trees. I've tried to be creative and put in curves and things. The butterfly bush was a gift from some coworkers a few years ago. It's super hearty, too!

We *definitely* do stuff on a budget, too! The woodchips we used were $2.78 for a 20 lb bag at WalMart. We bought 8 of them for both the front and back yards. And, I only spent maybe $15 on the irises and wildflower seeds. The rest was lots of labor - weeding and digging and raking.
