First, school started back up for me this week. I'm taking three classes this semester, two on campus, and one online. Well, they all have an online component, and one of the on campus ones is actually a compressed video course being streamed in from the school's other campus. Good luck with school.

I didn't see too many movies this summer. I did see JW and A:AoU. I think I liked them equally. They were good, but kind of forgettable, popcorn movies.

Yeah, I think part of the difference between those two, and the other two movies that I like better was how I felt they fit in their franchises. All of the movies were either sequels, or in the case of the Minions a prequel, and so I looked at them not only on their own, but as part of the franchise. I didn't feel like JW or A:AoU did the best jobs of adding to the established worlds of their franchises, while I felt like Minions and MI:RN were not only fun in their own right, but they added something good to their canon.

I hope you have a good semester! Is your American Lit class for a specific period, or is it more of a survey? I took early and late American lit, and I really didn't enjoy the material of the early one--so many Puritans, ugh! European short stories sounds like a good topic for a class, though!

More of a survey. It's called American Lit to 1900. It's the first half of the required 200 level survey of American Lit. If I can pass the CLEP tests for British Lit, and American Lit I won't have to take all the survey courses. I still need to get those CLEP tests set up to see how they go.

European short stories sounds like a good topic for a class, though!

I didn't realize when I signed up for it that the focus changes depending on who's teaching it, and this semester the professor teaching it will be focus on Russian short stories. Not sure how I'm going to like those, but I need the class for my International Lit requirement.

Good luck for the new semester!

I was really positively surprised by MI:RN, because it had that gratuitous bikini shot of Rebecca Ferguson in the trailer, but that wasn't in the movie anymore and she came across as a really cool and real character. Thoroughly enjoyable movie.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. I mean Ilsa was in a bikini in the movie when Ethan and Benji arrived at her place in Casablanca. Her coming up out of the pool in it the way she did might have been showing off her figure, but she had been in the pool working on trying to hold her breath for 3 minutes. It wasn't strictly about getting her in a bikini. I didn't mind the amount of time they had Ferguson show skin, both because it was reasonable within context, and because they included multiple scenes that had Cruise show skin.

I don't know if you've seen the MI:RN trailer - I've seen it oh my god, a lot in the last weeks because they basically showed it before every movie, and there was one shot of that swimming pool scene in Casablanca, that annoyed the hell out of me. It was that typical male gaze shot that's just there to ogle the female character - she was coming out of the pool but they were showing her from behind and almost cut off her head in the shot so that the viewer practically had to focus on her ass. The trailer made her look like the typical love interest for the hero we usually get in action movies - I'm pretty sure now that that was a conscious marketing decision, but of course I couldn't know that back then. So, that shot just annoyed me so much ( ... )

Ah. It probably didn't even register with me, since it was just one shot, and I'm used to how Hollywood treats the female form.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I thought it was interesting that they took the marketing approach of making her look like a typical love interest while hinting at her being more complicated than that in interviews about the movie.

As was the equality in showing skin between Cruise and Ferguson, yes.

Heh. Call me shallow, but I like it when I get to see topless guys. Not to mention when someone like Tom Cruise or Chris Pratt makes it clear that they enjoy being part of female fantasies. I will enjoy for sometime how much Chris talked enthusiastically about getting objectified.

...the huge discussion JW brought up afterwards in the media surprised me a bit TBH. *shrugs*I was glad to hear I wasn't the only one who was annoyed as Hell by ( ... )

That's better than not making it to the movies at all? I wholeheartedly recommend Minions and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I especially recommend MI:RN if you enjoyed Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye in A:AoU. I give a more reserved recommendation for Jurassic World. As long as you don't expect much in the way of plot and-or believability, Chris Pratt and the special effects are a lot of fun.
