Exploding shells echo above her head like the footfalls of an angry god, ringing through her ears and rattling the echoic expanse within her chest. For the first time in three hundred and forty-one years Bella can feel a heartbeat within her, synthetic though it is. Though the lights of the bomb shelter have long since flickered their last, she can still make out the cheery posters detailing safety protocol that helped no one, her nocturnal vision allowing her to scour the room

“I’m remembering, Carlisle. Can’t I at least have that? Memories are all I have left.” She realizes just how true that statement is as she fingers the bottom of her threadbare pocket and the tiny hole worn there, recalling the crushing sorrow and guilt she’d felt when she realized her wedding ring had slipped through sometime during the last exodus.

“I think…it’s time for me to go Bella.”

She finally opens her eyes. The thundering above begins again.

“Where are you going?”

He grasps her chin in his palm, smooth to spite his centuries of life, and smiles down at her kindly. “I am going where pain will no longer trouble us.”

Her bottom lip makes a smooth descent from between her teeth, releasing with a soft pluck.

“That sounds nice. Can I follow you?”

“Of course my child.”

Hand in the crook of his elbow, Bella ascends the shelter steps.

Ah!
This was lovely, and sad, and nothing at all like what I expected, and all-the-better for it. So sad and bittersweet. I love the lines about how Bella viewed death before her change, that it wasn't immortality that separated her from loved ones, but the lack of it.
