There have been a few posts recently about losing weight and I've seen a lot of inaccurate comments made. I just thought I would give some factual recommendations ( Read more... )

The only thing I would add is to 4, and that is:

Make sure you are getting enough protein. The referenced Stumptuous site goes into this in detail, but basically, your body NEEDS protein to repair muscles- so if you're exercising and don't feel like you're getting any better at it, it may well be that you're not getting enough lean protein- in our culture where we eat a lot of convienece foods, a lot of people do not get enough protein.

This does not, however, mean you need to eat a crazy no-carb diet. Just that you should be aware of how much you turn to carbs to fill you up, or for quick meals.

yes, and it's very easy to get the adequate amounts of protein if you just watch what you eat. i believe it's .9 grams of protein per pound of body weight each day.

Yup. It is mostly easy grab-and-run stuff that causes problems- stuff like cereal bars are very easy to keep in the kitchen for breakfast on the run, but the vast majority of them- even the 'healthy' brand ones- are just loaded down with carbohydrates and you end up spending a meal's worth of calories on just a bunch of carbs- meaning when you try to eat more traditionally balanced meals later on (with a mix of carbs, protein, and fats), you don't get enough protein at the end of the day.

If you get into the habit of trying to get a little protein each meal, even for snacks, it's not too hard to keep things in proportion.

(Note that you CAN now get cereal bar type things with reasonable amounts of protein, without going to a specialty store, but you do have to check the labels to see if the protein content is really meaningful.)

oh you know we'll still get the "lift light and do lots of reps" to poke fun at. or we could just send them to gymrats with a picture of their favorite celebrity and let the sharks over there eat them alive.

and if you DO want to eat something, just put it in your mouth and chew it up. then spit it out into a napkin and throw it away. then make yourself puke. eat less than 400 cals because "nothing tastes as good as being thin feels."

"models are not healthy. Stop trying to look like them. What they do to their bodies to be underweight is not healthy. The pictures of celebrities or models on magazines, websites, posters, etc are PHOTOSHOPPED. They don't actually look that perfect in real life. They have blemises and uneven skin tones and some even have little rolls on their stomach. These are taken out of their photos. If you don't believe me, do a quick Google search."

I used to model, and i was never unhealthy. I am 5'8", 110 pounds, and i exercise. I eat, i've never dieted, and i don't smoke or do anything to "lose weight". I have a tiny bone structure. My hips around are only 31 inches. In fact, this is what i've been doing for ten years that helps me stay in good shape. My arms may look skinny, but that is because of riding. You fight with a 1200 pound animal for 10 years and see how in shape YOUR arms are. If i flex i have pretty big muscle tone in my upper arms. (especially my right one, my blowdryer/flat iron arm ( ... )

at 5'8" your weight is in the "too low" or "unhealthy" range. while it may be simply genetics that has kept you lean without dieting, it is a very rare anomaly. and all of the jocks i know do lift weights and workout and watch their diet in order to be great riders. i don't know your age or how much time you spend riding/grooming/shoveling so all of that can also come into play.

to act like even LESS than the majority of models AREN'T dieting like crazy is just sheer stupid. yes, girls outside of the modeling world have EDs and some of them die from it. but it's in your face how severe it is in the modeling world. there are no accusations here. it's been proven. it's fact. perhaps i should have said, "most models" but i'm content with my statement because at 5'8", you're severely underweight.

yet i eat about three meals a day (i hate breakfast foods of any kind, so i don't eat breakfast. I usually end up making food at like midnight though when i get hungry), drink coke none stop, and don't count calories of any kind. I ride about every other day, and have been for about ten years. My weight has never caused any sort of health concern. If you see me in person, my bones are not sticking out ( picture ), you can't see my ribs, i don't look "unhealthy ( ... )
