And re: the drug test: it's probably policy to test all incoming people who're going to actually have a job with real responsibilities. It's only after you get hired that the policies you mentioend kick in.
Personally, I think drug testing is bullshit, since they can't tell the employer that you showed up to the job fucked up, or that you're a chronic user, or if someone slipped you something. All they say is "This person was exposed to a certain drug sometime between an hour and three weeks before the sample was taken." Not to mention that the drugs most responsible for lost time and such are alcohol and tobacco...anyway. :)
