“Are they okay?” Buffy asked, desperately, as Jack joined her, Ianto and Spike down in the vaults. She had joined Ianto and Spike before Adam and the others had arrived. She didn’t trust herself not to give the game away.
“They’re fine. Except Tosh.”
“What’s wrong with Tosh?”
“Willow made her fall asleep.”
“Willow did?”
“Her eyes went black and she said ‘sleep’ and Tosh fell asleep,” Jack explained, throwing Adam into a cell and locking the door.
“Will used magic?!” Buffy exclaimed as Adam hit the far wall of the cell and spun around to cling to the glass.
“Yeah, I guess she did. Can we deal with Adam and deal with Willow later?”
“Oh. Good idea,” Buffy said. “I’ll go and check on Willow and Tosh while you and Ianto ...” She gestured at Adam. “You know.”
“Don't kill me. I had to become part of your memories in order to survive. I didn't mean any harm,” Adam shouted through the glass.
“You changed us!” Jack told him.
“Be careful, Jack,” Buffy said, touching his arm. He smiled at her.
“Always.”
05:34
“Is she okay?” Buffy enquired, stepping into the infirmary.
Owen looked up from where he was looking at Tosh and Willow stepped out of the shadows from nearby, wringing her hands.
“Oh, Will, are you okay?” Buffy asked, walking over to and embracing her friend.
Willow shook her head into Buffy’s shoulder. “I ... I used magic, Buffy. What if I go dependant again?”
“You won’t, Will, you’ll be fine, okay?” Buffy kissed her forehead and looked round at Tosh then at Owen. “How is she?”
“She’s just asleep. I don't know whether to wake her yet.”
“Leave her,” Buffy said. “Wake her if we need to. Let her sleep.”
The infirmary door opened again and Spike stepped in. Willow tensed, her fists clenching. “Buffy ... Spike ...” she whimpered. Buffy tightened her hold on the redhead.
“I don't know how or why but he’s on our side. For now.” Buffy shot him a warning look and he rolled his eyes, about to argue, but stopped.
“Meh, why bother?” he asked himself as he stepped towards Tosh. “Is she okay?” he enquired.
“What do you care?” Willow demanded.
He looked at her and their eyes met as he yelled, “I care about her, okay?”
Her jaw dropped as she looked into his eyes. “Oh my God,” she breathed.
“What?” Spike and Buffy asked in unison.
“He ... he ... Buffy, he has ...”
Buffy gaped. “A soul?”
“No,” Willow said. “It’s like a part of him that he’s always had but his love for you has brought out. Wow, Buffy ...”
“His love for me?” Buffy scoffed. “He doesn’t love me! He tries to kill me! On a regular basis!” Buffy argued.
“I’m in love with you, Slayer!” Spike shouted. “She’s right!”
Willow was still stunned. “I couldn’t see it before because I’d locked my magic away but now ... It’s like he has a replica of a soul, Buffy.”
“But not a soul?” Spike demanded.
“So he’s still an evil vampire I can stake?” Buffy asked.
“Someone tell me what’s going on here?” Owen asked.
Buffy opened her mouth to speak, but at that moment the comms crackled and Jack’s voice came through. “Right, everyone come to the conference room. We have to rid ourselves of Adam once and for all. And bring Tosh.”
05:47
When Spike walked into the conference room a few minutes later, everyone was around the table. Jack was stood by the monitor. “Our memories define us,” he started. “Adam changed those memories and changed who we are. Now I have to help you all go back.” He walked around the table towards Spike. “Gonna sit down?”
Spike shook his head. “No thanks, I’m not into drugs and hypnosis, personally. They don't work on me, anyway.”
Jack turned to the conference table and Spike followed his gaze as he spoke. Willow looked angsty, wringing her hands and watching Tosh. Buffy and Ianto were gazing at Jack. Gwen was just sat, normally. Tosh was looking destroyed on the inside. Owen was looking dejected. Faith was looking bored. As a whole, the conference table was not a pretty sight. Xander and Anya were the only moderately-cheery ones there, holding each other’s hands on the table.
Jack pressed a button and the screen changed to a hypnotic picture. “Let me take you back,” he said, “to before we all met. Feel around for anything that makes you what you are. The hidden. And the forgotten.”
“You really have the whole mysterious and enigmatic thing down cold, don't you, Jack?” Spike asked.
“Tell me where you are,” Jack said.
“I’m in the conference room, you?” Spike replied.
Jack glared at him. “I meant them.”
Gwen burst out laughing, suddenly, and Jack smiled at her along the table.
“But I love you because you’re my son,” Owen came out with.
“Maths club. Something so reliable about maths...” Tosh said.
“The surge of magic in my fingertips,” Willow said. “Tara blowing out the candle when I admit it’s her I want to be with.”
“First day of Kindergarten. Willow has the yellow crayon and she’s crying. I tell her it’s okay,” Xander said, a fond look on his face.
“‘You’re a slayer’. Best words in the world,” Faith stated.
Buffy bit her lip, piping up at last. “Meeting Angel. The necklace he gave me. A crucifix. Loving him.” Her hand went to her throat and the necklace hanging around it.
Spike left the conference room.

“Hi, Rhys?” Pause. “Yeah, this is Spike.” Pause. “Yes, the Billy Idol wannabe.” Pause. “Yes, I still have peroxide blonde hair.” Pause. “Yes.” Pause. “Yes.” Pause. “No.” Pause. “Look, will you bloody well shut up so I can say what I phoned for and stop pissing around?” Pause. “Right. I need you to not mention the last two days. Ever.” Pause. “What are you, the Spanish Inquisition?” Pause. “Of course it was real! I was there!” Pause. “Forget I said anything.”
Spike sat down in Tosh’s chair and sighed. “Just do it, okay, mate?” Pause. “Thanks Rhys. Gwen will be home soon, I think.” Pause. “Yes, she’s fine. Don't worry. Everything’ll be back to normal soon enough.” Pause. “Stop asking so many bloody questions!” He slammed down the phone. “Bloody hell,” he muttered.
