Chapter 3c

01:34

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted to do was go home to a man she didn’t know. But when Buffy told her she needed to, she didn’t really know how to say no. After all, they swore this Rhys bloke was safe and that she would be safe with him.

And she trusted Jack and Buffy when it came down to it. Not that she was going to let them leave her without a fight. No, she was going to argue with Jack until she turned blue.

But he didn’t let her. He just left her there.

Buffy could tell she wasn’t very happy as she and Jack left the flat.

“Are you sure we should just leave her?” Buffy said.

“She’ll be fine. Rhys is safe. He wouldn't hurt a fly,” Jack replied.

“I’m not worried about Gwen,” she retorted. “I’m worried about Rhys. She still has her gun on her.”

“She won’t shoot him, if that’s what you mean.” Jack got into the SUV.

Climbing in beside him, Buffy told him, “I wouldn't be so sure. People can be very dangerous when they think their lives are in danger.”

Ianto was fed up, but instead of going home he opted to hang around the conference room feeling like a spare part. He stood in the doorway, leaning against the wall and listened to Tosh and Owen talking about the box they’d found.

“So, according to the molecular breakdown, this potentially alien complex artefact is, in fact, made out of wood,” Tosh said.

“Well, perhaps it fell in the crate by mistake. Picked up meson energy from the other stuff,” Owen replied.

“Yeah, right!” Tosh retorted.

It was funny. Ianto had never really liked Owen, but he couldn’t help feeling sorry for him when he was around Tosh. She was always so mean to him. No wonder he was in love with Buffy; at least she was kind.

“Oh, yes, sorry, it's a stupid idea,” Owen said.

“I think Jack brought it in,” Ianto chipped in.

“No, I'm sure Adam found it on an excavation a few months back,” Tosh insisted.

Ianto sighed. He’d have to prove himself. Again. “I'll have a look in the diary. I like to log the interesting stuff,” he said.

“You write about artefacts in your diary?” Tosh asked.

“Yeah,” Ianto said, shrugging. “Passes the time.” He pushed off from the wall and walked away. A minute later he walked into the kitchen, opening one of the cupboards and pulling out a black book with a lock on it. He’d started keeping a lock on it ever since Faith had shown a little too much interest in him. He didn’t trust her not to sneak a peek.

He left the kitchen, wandering down into the main hub and sitting down on the sofa, opening the book. He hadn’t written in it the past few days, he hadn’t had the energy or inclination.

It took him a few minutes to realise what, exactly, was wrong with his diary.

There were no mentions of Adam, but almost every page had mentions of Jack: waking up in Jack’s bed, waking up in Jack’s arms, waking up in Jack, kissing Jack in the office, stolen kisses during a weevil hunt, embarrassment of being caught by Buffy, a quick shag in the archives.

There was even a mention of how Ianto was trying to work out the best way of asking Jack to move in with him on the final page.

He wondered, for a moment, whether he’d been living in some delusion, but he realised that if it was, indeed, a delusion, he would have deluded himself that Buffy didn’t exist and wasn’t shagging the man he was in love with.

He leant back against the sofa. That meant only one thing:

Adam was wrong.

“What’s wrong?”

Ianto jumped out of his skin, launching himself off the sofa and to his feet. “M-my diary,” he said to Adam, who was sat on the sofa. He picked up the diary, holding it up. Ianto glared at him. “You’re not in it. Everyone else is.”

Adam walked over, flicking through the pages.

“Why would I leave you out when you’ve been here so long?” Ianto stammered.

Adam’s face turned sinister as he stepped closer to the terrified Welshman. Ianto took a step backwards.

“Like I’m remembering a man that doesn’t exist,” he said.

The diary dropped from Adam’s hand, hitting the floor with a thump. Ianto’s eyes were drawn to his hand, which was flickering as though not quite real. He was panting, scared to death of what was to come. “What are you?” he hissed.

It took Adam all of a second to throw himself at Ianto, slamming him into the water tower with a bang. “Cross me and I will fill you full of fake memories until your head is on fire because that’s how I exist.”

Ianto shoved him away, hard. “What did you do to Gwen? And to me and Jack?”

“Memory is a very delicate thing. Feeding myself in wiped out and changed other memories. It's a side-effect of what I have to do in order to survive. Jack’s memories of you were so distorted he fell for Buffy instead,” Adam snarled.

“He has to know,” Ianto said before he thought about it. In the seven seconds it took Adam to hit him again, slamming his palm to Ianto’s forehead, he realised it would have made more sense to pretend to cooperate.

“Remember this!” Adam snarled and the world around Ianto changed, his head swimming, confusion in it. He tried to keep the real memories in the forefront of his mind, but he failed, the fake memories pushing their way in.

And Ianto was screaming.
