“What do I say again, Moony?” James asked as the four boys tramped down the corridor. The poem had already been rehearsed again and again and again. Remus found Shakespeare’s beauties waning a bit with each new repetition from Prongs.
Sirius tugged a little at the collar of his black and white dress robes. “Why d’we all have t’wear these?” All four of the Marauders were clad in uncomfortably warm dress robes, quickly sweating spots into the armpits and down the backs. True, dress robes were not appropriate for the early September weather. Peter didn’t even bother to complain. Either that or he simply couldn’t for all the panting.
“Moral support, Pads.” Remus murmured, giving him a look. It was just the beginning of their sixth year at Hogwarts and no doubt just the beginning of the many attempts James would make at wooing Lily. At least this one was well-rehearsed and Moony-approved.
Sirius grumbled and complained the entire way out to the courtyard. Remus considered smacking him in the back of the head, but he didn’t fancy being hexed.
“Oh no! She’s sitting with Snivellus!” James groaned, halting in his steps. For all the confidence he usually exuded, James looked like he’d just seen a Dementor and had the happiness sucked right out of him.
Lily sat under the oak tree chatting animatedly with Snape. Remus knew that they were good friends, but did they always have to sit together? Poor Severus was going to have to endure the pains of the Marauders all year if he kept this up.
“Look, we’ll distract Severus while you go and recite to Lily.” Remus looked up at James, who had grown frightfully tall over the summer. Well, at least taller than him and Sirius. Peter seemed perpetually, pitifully short, which actually made Remus feel a little better about his own height.
“Yeah, we’ll hex him!” Sirius snarled, his gaze following each of Snape’s movements. James was too nervous to have the same malicious attitude.
“No we won’t! Right Pete? We’re just going to talk to him. Just talk, Sirius.” Remus turned away from his friends and, seeking out his nerve, walked right up to Lily and Snape. “Hey Lily, Oi Sev. Listen, could I have a word? I just had a question about the Arithmancy homework.”
Lily and Severus exchanged looks. “Lily’s in our class too.” He finally said, not getting to his feet. Remus chewed his lip, trying to think quickly. “And…why are you wearing dress robes?”
“They all are.” Lily said, green eyes quickly looking over the other three Marauders who hung back a short distance.
“I---it’s a moral support thing. It’s really stupid, but there it is. Look, could I just have a word?” Remus hoped he could get this across with the quiet wheedling in his voice. “Lily, James wanted to tell you something. We’re just going to give you a minute alone is all.”
Severus and Lily looked at each other again. His pale face was flaring up in color. “It’s…Sev, I’ll be alright. He’s just going to come over here, ask me out, and be done with it. You know I’ll tell him off.” Snape nodded and got to his feet. He glared at Remus as he followed him a short distance away.
“Potter is a tosser.” He muttered under his breath. Remus exhaled slowly.
“He just really likes her is all. I don’t know why you two hate each other so much, but it’s all a load of bollocks.” Remus loosened his collar, sweat dripping down his neck.
“Nice dress robes anyway.” Severus was looking at the ground when Remus glanced up at him.
“Uh, thanks.”
“What, is Snivellus giving you a compliment?” A heavy hand landed on Remus’s shoulder and he turned on the spot. Sirius and Peter had come strolling up.
“Suppose you would’ve tried t’beat me to it, would you Black?” Severus smiled as if he knew a secret, dark eyes boring small holes into Sirius’s head.
“Shut up! Both of you!” Remus hissed and nodded towards James. All three boys turned to watch as James strutted up to Lily under the tree. He bowed deeply, dress robes splaying out around him. She let him get through about half of the mucked up recitation before telling him that she wasn’t interested.
Remus had the feeling she was flattered. He didn’t know as much about poetry as he might like to, but Remus knew Shakespeare’s sonnets. A hand patted the small of his back and he smiled to himself. He hated being all girlish about it, but Shakespeare really was quite nice.
“That’ll about do us for today, aye Snivellus? She’s gone and said no, stupid bird.”
“Get bent.” Snape pushed past them and walked back to the tree.
“Maybe you’re not such a girl after all, Moony.” Peter piped up, unbuttoning his collar. “She didn’t go for it.”
“Come on, Wormtail. He’ll always be my girl.” Sirius snickered and patted Remus’s shoulder as they began to walk in the direction of their pride-wounded friend.
