“I cannot believe we just spent an hour in a book shop!” Sirius grumbled as they walked down the sidewalk. The darkening clouds above them rumbled with the threat of rain.

“It was more like twenty minutes.” Remus said, pushing his new Walt Whitman collection back into its bag. He glanced up at the sky.

“Well, it felt like hours.”

“I happen to like the book shop!” The sky rumbled again in the distance. They passed a friendly-looking café on their way back to The Three Broomsticks. Remus cast another glance up at the clouds and frowned. They were nearly ten blocks from their destination.

“Your mum’s a book shop!”

“If my mum’s a book shop, then yours’ is a wine shop!”

“Nice retort there, Moony.” Sirius chuckled. Remus went pink.

“I was only responding to your clever retort.”

“Ah shit!” The skies seemed to open up, dropping torrents of rain down on London. Remus and Sirius looked at one another and then bolted, sneakers thundering on the sidewalk.

In the span of one block, the boys were drenched through their sopping clothes and Remus suspected that his new book was soaked too. Then he spotted the large U sign popping at them from the side of a building.

He grabbed Sirius’s hand and dragged him in the direction of it. “We’ll take the Underground the rest of the way!” He shouted over the din of the storm. Remus missed the confused look on his friend’s face as he dragged him towards the shelter of the Underground awning.

Their feet made loud clattering noises on the cement stairs as they disappeared down into the station.

“You can let go of my hand now, Moony.” Remus blushed again and dropped Sirius’s hand, stepping a few feet away. “Where are we, anyway?” Sirius looked up at the high ceilings curiously.

“Underground station.”

“The wha-”

Remus smiled. “The Underground station. Muggle public transportation. It’s an underground train that will take us to about a block from The Leaky Cauldron.” Sirius gaped at him.

“Cor! Muggles are so creative. But, how…?”

“Follow me.” Remus led the way over to the token machines with all the authority of a half-blood. He’d used the Underground countless times and was surprised that Sirius didn’t know about it. What had he thought those giant U signs were all about?

Remus stepped up to a machine and deposited a quid. Two tokens dropped down into the small metal bin at the bottom. “You use these tokens to get in and out.” He ended up grabbing Sirius’s hand again to lead him over to the turnstiles because they dark haired boy was so dumbstruck, blue eyes looking over every inch of the place.

“Watch me.” Remus dropped a token into a slot and then stepped through the turnstile, the little metal arms rolling forward as he did so. “Now you do the same.”

Sirius glanced at his token again before dropping it into the slot and pushing his way through the turnstile. “Moony! Moony! It’s got me!” He cried out and then laughed when Remus did turn around to see that he had actually made it through in one piece.

“Tosser.” Remus rolled his eyes and walked out onto the platform, looking up at the signs. “Oi! We need to be on that train!” He pointed at a long orange and white submarine-like train with opened doors cheerfully chiming. “Sirius! Come ON!” Remus had to again tug at his friend’s hand and drag him over to the train.

They made a mad dash, hands tightly clasped until they were both off the platform and onto the slightly-wobbly train. The doors shut behind them not a moment later; Remus exhaled heavily. They’d made it.

Sirius wriggled his fingers that were still being squeezed together by Remus’s. He looked down at their hands and the train lurched forward. Remus fell over, fingers releasing from his friend’s.

As he pushed himself up, Sirius released a roar of laughter. “Shoulda held on!”
