I weep for the future.

Ya know, it doesn't surprise me too much that the frats across the way are playing music that was popular when I was in high school and college. I mean, when I was in college, we were all listening to Led Zepplin, the Beatles, the Moody Blues, and the Rolling Stones, and I'm sure the 40-somethings were thinking "Hey, we used to listen to this when ( Read more... )

Look on the bright side. They could be playing the complete catalogue of Lock, Stock and Barrel.

I just had to pop in to say how much I love "Tainted Love"! Awesome, awesome song.

Dexy's Midnight Runners on the other hand, I despised. I cannot say I hate them now since that would mean I would need to care one way or the other.

What's wrong with Dexy? or Soft Cell? Next you'll be talking smack about Cutting Crew, White Snake, Winger and Wang Chung.

There's nothhing wrong with any of these groups, any more than there's anything wrong with The Captain and Tennille, The Carpenters, or Lipps, Inc. I even own "Come On Eileen" on 45, and re-bought it from iTunes.

I'm just flabbergasted that of everything 80s, that song in particular would have such legs.

VH1 just ran a marathon of "100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s". What do you want to bet that some guys at the frat house watched it all, and decided it would make a great playlist? Which it would, of course.

However, having been a member of an Irish fraternity in the 80s, if I never hear U2 again, it will be too soon. Dexy's is protest music of the best kind to my ears after four years of non-stop U2. The only time they ever played anything other than U2 in our fraternity house was when I commandeered the tape player (remember cassette tapes?) and played three hours of George Thorogood and KISS. It was the only party we ever had where people actually got up, air-banded, karaoked, and danced!

I'll grant that even U2 could get tiresome after a while. (Though my sister does like to tell the story of how in her freshman year of college, a little-known Irish rock band with a good-looking lead singer played at the school...)
