Ya know, it doesn't surprise me too much that the frats across the way are playing music that was popular when I was in high school and college. I mean, when I was in college, we were all listening to Led Zepplin, the Beatles, the Moody Blues, and the Rolling Stones, and I'm sure the 40-somethings were thinking "Hey, we used to listen to this when I was in college! WTF?"
So yeah, hearing classics of the 80s shouldn't surprise me so much.
But dudes. What's with these choices? I could understand if you were playing U2, or G&R, or even the B-52s if you prefer a pop-punk sound. But Dexy's Midnight Runners?
That's like playing the freaking Captain and Tennille. Now, I have nothing against the C and T--I have a lingering fondness for "Muskrat Love"--but in my day, twenty-year-old frat boys did not play "Love Will Keep Us Together" blasting on their stereo to the street outside.
It's really sad when the old folks across the street are making fun of your wussy musical choices instead of grousing about "kids today and their noisy music!"
ETA: now it's "Tainted Love," and earlier it was "It's Friday (I'm In Love)". Someone's cracked out the "Greatest 1-hit Wonders Pop Hits of the 80s" CD.
ETA2: Then they played Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Yes, that song was and continues to be thoroughly awesome. However, I can't help but think (a) I still think it's awesome at least in part because I heard it when I was a teenager, and (b) kinda peculiar for a traditional frat house. Although really, my reaction is revealing my own prejudices, too. The more I think about it, the more amused/pleased I am by these guys totally breaking stereotypes.
