I follow the L.A. Kings. This was easier when I lived within driving distance, or at least terrestrial radio broadcast distance, of the team's locale. It became a bit more challenging when I was in Houston for a few years and it got much harder when I moved to Georgia. The last few years have been good, with 2 Stanley Cup championships in 3 years. The Kings just became the fourth team in NHL history to come back from 3-0 down in a best of seven playoff series and win 4-3. Nine teams have forced the seventh game after losing the first three, and four have now gone on to win. That's not that bad a batting average; the real challenge seems to be actually getting to the seventh game.

The Kings were just knocked out of the playoffs by the Blackhawks, who will go on to face the Bruins for the Stanley Cup. I'm hoping the Bruins win, not because I like that team or the city of Boston, but because Chicago is one of 3 teams in the Western Conference that I just can't cheer for (Vancouver and Anaheim are the other two ( Read more... )

The NHL's regular season is over. The Kings are in the playoffs. I have shaved my beard in preparation. I also decided that it was time to give myself a haircut, finally changing from the #4 guard on the clippers to the #2. The NHL season will finally start on Saturday (1/19). DIRECTV is going to have a free trial of the NHL Center Ice package from 1/19-31, on channels 769-785. I'm going to see if there's a noticeable difference between this service and NHL GameCenter Live (the online equivalent) with my TV as monitor for my old laptop. The Los Angeles Kings have won their first Stanley Cup. 16-4 in the playoffs, 4-2 in the final series, and goalie Jonathan Quick won the Conn Smythe trophy for MVP in the playoffs. I went to my first Augusta RiverHawks game today. I've seen NHL, AHL, ECHL, and now SPHL games live. The Augusta RiverHawks won their game against the Columbus (GA) Cottonmouths by a score of 4-3 in overtime. It was fun, aside from the kids with the vuvuzelas in the audience.
