Real Simple Magazine: Apple and Grits Cake, liquor optional

I received this month's Real Simple magazine in the mail yesterday and I immediately decided I wanted to make this cake. I did not have grits on hand but I needed to head to the grocery store anyway. I used small gala apples. The taste is not overly sweet. Next time I make this I will definitely add raisins and possibly walnuts if I have any on ( Read more... )

This cake is also on my "to make" list. Any other tricks besides the raisins (which I will probably skip - not a fan).

I am betting you could use a flat square pan to reduce the cooking time significantly.

As far as flavors go I would be willing to try any of these-
Cranberries
Cinnamon (I don't care for it but it would go well)
Pecans
Walnuts
Caramel syrup

Real simple is one of my favorite recipe resources. If you can track down their ThanksGiving Issue from about 2000...the whole issue is GOLD! I have dragged it with me all over the United States and now it is on my bookshelf here in Germany because its just that awesome!
