A/N: Double drabble and a half, 250 words.
Ryo drew a deep breath, drinking in the unmistakable aroma of freshly cut grass, and smiling. “The scent of summer,” he said with a sigh. “Reminds me of cutting lawns when I was a kid.”
“Seriously? You used to do that?”
“Every summer from the age of… eleven, I guess. Our own lawn first, then I started asking neighbours if they wanted theirs cut. I liked being out in the sunshine, and I made quite a bit if money. Had around forty regular customers, cut half the lawns one week, the other half the next.”
“Quite the young businessman,” Dee teased. “What did ya spend your earnings on?”
“I didn’t.” Ryo grinned at his partner. “It all went into my savings account.”
“You’re kiddin’ me! You didn’t even treat yourself to a comic book or a candy bar?”
“Nope, those things came out of the allowance my parents gave me. I was saving for a car.” His smile widened.
Dee got it then. “The Pontiac?”
“Yep! Had to cut a lot of lawns to pay for that car, even more to buy all the replacement parts, and new tires, but I don’t regret it, not for a second.” Ryo’s expression softened. “The smell of cut grass still takes me right back to those hot summer weekends, cutting lawns all day, then coming home and working on the car with my dad in the evenings. Those were probably the best times of my life, growing up. Wouldn’t trade them for anything.”
