Bernie Harris, no matter what he might think, is nothing more than a petty crook, always looking for a chance to make a quick buck by less than legal means. None of his ambitious schemes ever amount to anything, and in truth he probably never manages to break even, yet he still keeps trying.
Under other circumstances, Jack might have admired his tenacity, his refusal to accept that when it comes to crime, even the pettiest kind, he doesn’t have what it takes to succeed. But more often than not, he’s a thorn in Torchwood’s side, getting hold of things that have no business being in the hands of the general public, never mind a loser like Bernie.
This time, he’s managed to get his hands on a working replicator. If he’d been smart, he would have started replicating something small and easily saleable, jewellery perhaps, but no, not Bernie. He’s after the big score. He replicates money, fifty-pound notes, which naturally all come out perfect in every way, except for the matching serial numbers. They’re a dead giveaway that the notes are counterfeit.
Jack should leave him to be arrested, but he doesn’t. Trouble magnet Bernie has his uses.
