“I thought about maybe becomin’ an architect if I didn’t make it through the police academy,” Dee said, gazing out the car window at the very exclusive residences set well back from the road. “Designin’ and buildin’ homes for the rich and famous, rakin’ in the money.”
“So what sort of houses would you have designed?” Ryo asked, keeping his eyes on the road, looking for the house they wanted. “All modern glass and steel?”
“Nah, those are just ugly. Somethin’ more classic, clean lines and natural materials, wood and stone. Steel is fine for skyscrapers, you need a strong infrastructure for anything that tall, but for houses you want somethin’ warmer, more invitin’. Like this place,” he added as Ryo pulled up outside the gates and pressed the button on an intercom, requesting admission. “That’s a good piece of design.”
The house was long and low, fitting into the landscape like a jewel in its setting, and Ryo studied it appreciatively as the gates slid open. “It’s beautiful. Wouldn’t want to live here though.”
“Would be one hell of a commute,” Dee agreed. “Just wish we had better news for the family.”
Their daughter had staged her own kidnapping.
