Loss was something Ryo understood only too well, having lost both his parents tragically and unexpectedly far too soon. He’d been eighteen however, almost an adult, and although it had been difficult, he’d been old enough to cope. The grief had been devastating, but he hadn’t been completely alone. His aunt and uncle had taken him in, helped him through those first few months until he was ready to be out on his own.
It had to be much worse for Bikky. The boy was only ten, and his dad had been his only family. There were no grandparents, aunts or uncles to give him a home; he really was alone in the world.
“I know it doesn’t seem like it right now,” he told the boy as they sat together in the precinct’s break room. “But you will be okay. In time it’ll hurt less when you think about your dad. You’ll be able to focus on the happier times.”
“Am I gonna forget him?” Blue eyes stared worriedly up at Ryo.
“No.” Ryo shook his head. “You’ll never forget him, and you’re always going to miss him, like you miss your mom, but he’ll always be with you, in your heart and in your mind. The people we love the most are never really gone, not completely. We can’t see or touch them, but they are still a part of us.”
“What’s gonna happen to me?”
“I’ve been thinking about that. For now, because of what happened to your dad, you’re under police protection so you’ll be staying with me for a bit. After that… Well, I’m gonna talk to some people, see if they’ll let you stay with me permanently.”
Bikky’s eyes widened. “Seriously? You’d do that? You don’t even know me!”
“I know enough, and more importantly, I understand what you’re going through. I know you’re gonna be sad a lot, and sometimes you’ll be angry, and that’s okay. You lost your dad, it’s a lot to deal with, but I can help you if you let me. That way neither of us will be alone.”
